- Geometrical and numerical strategies in students' functional reasoningPublication . Ponte, João Pedro daThis paper reports results of a reaserch project on the reasoning processes used by students in handling numerical functions and interpreting Cartesian graphs. Functions are a central topic in the high school and college undergraduate mathematics curriculum. Many properties of numerical functions are naturally described by their graphs, thus making particularly relevant the dialetic between numerical and geometrical aspects. In this paper, functional reasoning refers to the mental processes associated with the classical notions of functional dependence -- that is, with the notion that in some circumstances the value assumed by a certain variable depends in a weel-defined way on the value taken by another variable.
- Students’ strategies and reasoning processes in computer educational gamesPublication . Matos, José Manuel; Ponte, João Pedro daThis study concerns the use of concepts by children and their thinking strategies playing educational games involving the number concepts of factor, prime, negative number, order relation and approximation. The games were found to constitute a stimulating learning environment and to provide observers a window on students' thinking.
- Project work with teachers involved in a program for the use of computers in educationPublication . Monteiro, Cecília; Ponte, João Pedro daThis research describes the evaluation of a teacher education program set up to foster the use of computers as a support for project work. The teachers, who got involved in the program mainly with the motivation of learning how to use computers, recognized changes in their attitudes and pedagogical practices.
- Teachers’ perceived roles of the computer in mathematics educationPublication . Ponte, João Pedro daThe reform movements concerned with innovative pedagogical approaches and the possibilities offered by information technologies rise new problems to inservice programs. These must give careful consideration to this pedagogical and cultural frame and to its inner dynimics. This study focus in the conceptions and attitudes of teachers involved in such a program regarding the educational role of the computer.
- Students' views and attitudes towards mathematics teaching and learning: A case study of a curriculum experiencePublication . Ponte, João Pedro da; Matos, J.F.; Santos, Leonor; Guimarães, Henrique Manuel; Canavarro Teixeira, Ana PaulaThis paper describes a qualitative case study dealing with the views about mathematics teaching and learning held by students of a school involved in a experience of new curricula, stressing active methodologies and groupwork. At grade 7, the students noticed important differences in the mathematics classes and welcomed them. At grade 10, students had a general positive attitude towards mathematics but did not perceive major chnages. However, they were very concerned with the implications of this experience for their academic progression.
- Graphic calculators in the classroom: Students’ viewpointsPublication . Ponte, João Pedro da; Canavarro Teixeira, Ana PaulaThis paper presents the results of a study about the views and attitudes of students of a low achieving 11th grade class who were involved in an innovative experience with graphic calculators for all academic year. Contrasting the results obtained from a questionnaire and from interviews, it concludes that students tended to point some improvements in the mathematics class, but attributed their origin more to their teacher’ style and personality than to the use of this technology.
- Mathematics teachers’ professional knowledgePublication . Ponte, João Pedro daThis paper addresses the study of teachers’ knowledge, beliefs, conceptions and practices, presenting some illustrations from the area of problem solving. In mathematics education, the teacher has attracted much less work than the student. This may be due, in part, to the different knowledge base of interest in each case. Regarding students, we are concerned with their learning of mathematics. The nature of mathematical knowledge is itself problematic, yet that does not seem to raise too many difficulties for our work. Regarding teachers, it is much less clear what is the specific knowledge (nec-essary for teaching mathematics) that we should be looking at. Is it knowledge of math-ematics content? Of mathematics pedagogy? Of students’ cognitive processes? Some mixture of several of these? In the first part of the paper I will briefly review work done on teachers’ professional knowledge and related concepts within and outside PME. Then, I will present cases taken from empirical research and discuss a few concepts used in our investigations. And in the final part I will contrast some general frameworks to study mathematics teachers’ professional knowledge and draw some perspectives for future work.
