- Adaptation and epistemic redress : the 1857 indian uprising in JunoonPublication . Mendes, Ana CristinaOur interest – curiosity, even – in the Victorian Age has resulted in a continued investment in ventriloquising the Victorians themselves, as in the case of the various adaptations of Victorian novels and afterlives of Victorian literature in contemporary settings, as well as through neo-Victorian renditions. Towards an epistemic reading of adaptation, this chapter discusses the Hindi film Junoon (1979), directed by Shyam Benegal and produced by Shashi Kapoor, a screen adaptation of the neo-Victorian novella A Flight of Pigeons (1978) by Anglo-Indian author Ruskin Bond, set during the 1857 Indian uprising against British rule, as a creative exercise of epistemic redress whose locus of enunciation and adaptation is a former colony of the British empire.

Cabral, Maria de Jesus"Futurista e Tudo': a obra de Almada Negreiros é o cadinho onde se geram experiências poéticas decisivas para o seculo XX, numa dinâmica interartística em que a vertente dramática ganha especial sentido, rumo a um teatro "escaparate de todas as artes''. Tendo-se embebido do experimentalismo que animava a vanguarda parisiense na senda do Lance de dados mallarmeano (Apollinaire, Marinetti, o casal Delaunay, Cocteau...), Almada desenvolve uma escrita teatral derrogando princípios e categorias "domesticadas" cuja poeticidade decorre da dimensão performativa da linguagem, para lá da dimensão referencial. Dialoga, nesse ponto, com a dramaturgia da palavra de Mallarme, alojada na forma e no dizer poéticos. Um dos conceitos chave para se perceber a transmutação que se processa em termos formais e discursivos, é o ritmo, que por dar forma "a um certo modo de dizer" (Henri Meschonnic) configura uma nova ideia de arte, em plena assunção da linguagem em constante devir, como tentaremos ilustrar pela leitura do poema "CELLE QUI N'A JAMAIS FAIT L’AMERICAIN" (1919).

- Ao Sabor do Amor: a viagem em My Blueberry Nights de Wong Kar-waiPublication . Duarte, JoséEm 2007, Wong Kar-wai fi lma a sua primeira obra em solo americano e em língua inglesa. O fi lme intitulado My Blueberry Nights não foi bem recebido por grande parte dos críticos. Nele, o realizador serve-se de um género tipicamente americano, o road movie, para contar a história da viagem de Elizabeth, uma mulher que parte em autodescoberta após uma crise amorosa e espiritual. O resultado é um fi lme cuidadoso que refl ete sobre a importância da viagem e da paisagem na cultura americana, onde a câmara procura fi lmar a importância do tempo e da memória, do passado e do presente. Desta forma, o presente estudo procura efetuar uma leitura do fi lme enquanto road movie e uma análise da relevância da viagem e regresso da protagonista como exemplo da transitoriedade da vida e da importância que o realizador coloca na ideia de destino(s) e nos encontros fortuitos que irão transformar a protagonista.

- Art et création chez Théophile GautierPublication . Cabral, Maria de Jesus; Santos, Ana ClaraAdmiré par Baudelaire et Mallarmé, Théophile Gautier n’est plus vu aujourd’hui comme le « génie limité » dont l’affubla Lanson au début du XXe siècle. L’effervescence des études critiques de ces dernières décennies a bien rendu justice à l’oeuvre d’un écrivain à la fois idolâtré et marginalisé par ses contemporains. La présence de Théophile Gautier au Portugal, du fait soit du nombre de traductions, soit de l’impact de son imaginaire sur les artistes lusophones justifie pleinement que l’on s’y attache et que l’on accorde à cet écrivain une place au sein de la collection Exotopies. Les études présentées ici portent aussi bien sur des écrits romanesques notamment les récits fantastiques et quelques récits de voyage, que sur d’autres facettes de l’oeuvre de Gautier moins retenues par la critique, tels que les rapports de la création gautierienne avec d’autres manifestations artistiques : avec la peinture, le théâtre ou la danse. Elles éclairent les contours de sa vision du monde et de ce qu’il appela la « transposition de l’art ». Oui ! Gautier assume son temps. Mais il l’assume en s’évadant.
- “Artworks, unlike terrorists, change nothing": Salman Rushdie and September 11Publication . Mendes, Ana CristinaThis essay sets out to demonstrate that rather than being an instance of fission, Rushdie’s most recent literary journalism as well as his latest novels, in particular Shalimar the Clown (2005), are the ultimate product of fusion, in the way that they result from the synthetic encounter – not disintegration – of contradictory states of affiliation. Any critical engagement with the global brand “Rushdie” must explore its manifold reverberations. In this sense, my concern is with teasing out a interrelated set of elements that have contributed to shape the discursive predicament in which the writer has been trapped for a couple of decades, and not with attaching a one-dimensional label for his post-fatwa and post-9/11 politics. The purpose of addressing the writer’s shifting positions as a public intellectual is not to appraise what might be called Rushdie’s “American turn,” nor to ascertain the inconsistencies of his ideological standing with reference to the cultural authority and military power of the US in general, and to the aftermath of September 11, 2001 in particular. Rather, a focal intention is to undermine the idea that the writer manifests, or did indeed manifest, a clear-cut pro-US government position in support of the “war on terror.”

- Between Lovemaking and an Autopsy, Hanif Kureishi's My Ear at His Hear t: Reading My FatherPublication . Flora, LuísaIn 2004, Hanif Kureishi published My Ear at His Heart: Reading My Father, a memoir of a failed author whose manuscripts never received any recognition. Rafiushan Kureishi, a writer exiled as a clerk at the Pakistani Embassy in London, was a disappointed man 'lost in suburban restraint', a 'redundant man' (as in the title of one of his rejected novels). While looking for his father in some manuscripts he has retrieved, Kureishi also confronts his own often painful and conflicted apprenticeship in writing. The suffering of his father is much more than material for writing - by addressing some of the fahter's unpublished texts, Kureishi questions vital dimensions of their dificult relationship as well as trying to better understand who this man had been. The homage unquestionably paid in My Ear at His Heart may also represent, in some peculiar nostalgic way, a settling of scores with a 'semi-broken' man whose rivalry towards his most successful journalist brother, Omar, sometimes spilled over into his only son's early success. Of course, Kureishi repeats and does not repeat his father - by becoming a celebrated writer he vindicates the father's lifelong frustrated dedication to literature.
