- Personal Epistemologies and Science Information: Exploring the Role of Scientific Evidence and Trust in Four Science-Related TopicsPublication . Rowland, Jussara; Estevens, João; Delicado, AnaThis chapter is based on a consultation on science communication organised in Portugal, in November 2019, in the context of the EU-funded project CONCISE (Communication Role on Perception and Beliefs of EU Citizens about Science). The main goal of the project was to provide qualitative knowledge through citizen consultation on the sources/channels by which EU citizens acquire their science-related knowledge and to understand how this knowledge influences their beliefs, opinions, and perceptions. The public consultation was held in Lisbon and had 102 citizens participating each in four rounds of group discussions, each revolving around a distinct science-related topic: climate change, vaccines, comple-mentary and alternative medicine,1 and GMOs (genetically modified organisms)2 . Using vignettes to illustrate individual positions, in this chapter, we examine these discussions through the lens of personal epis-temology theories (Hofer, 2008) and epistemic trust (Hendriks et al., 2016), focusing on the positions of selected participants throughout the four rounds of discussions of the Portuguese consultation. Our research question: how are personal epistemologies of science expressed when participants discuss different science-related topics? More specifically, by analysing the basis upon which participants justify their epistemic trust (or distrust) in science and expert knowledge, when assessing information on these subjects, we aim to reflect on the relation-ships individuals have with science in general and with specific scientific topics and how trust in scientific expertise is contextually interpreted.

Em anexo encontram-se a explicação de utilização da ferramenta digital, os questionários para os quatro tópicos, os quadros com os resultados dos questionários e as principais perguntas e respostas discutidas nos SC.
- Trust and Mistrust in Sources of Scientific Information on Climate Change and VaccinesPublication . Rowland, Jussara; Estevens, João; Krzewińska, Aneta; Warwas, Izabela; Delicado, AnaPublic trust in science and expertise remains a contentious issue. When public trust is analysed, it often simplifies a complex process of information retrieval and interpretation. Questionnaire surveys help us make sense of differences among actors and countries, but they fail to provide a comprehensive analysis of the reasons that lead citizens to trust a specific actor to differing degrees. Hence, we opted for using a qualitative grounded approach to understand how citizens make sense of their trust in several actors. This article draws from the results of public consultations with citizens in Portugal and Poland about two specific science-related topics—climate change and vaccines—focusing on citizens’ perceptions of trust in several sources of scientific information. The results show that citizens’ trust varies depending on the source of scientific information, and it is affected by the topic’s visibility and different national levels of institutional trust. It also concludes that citizens use different criteria to evaluate trustworthiness and that this process leads to different ways of expressing trust/mistrust: unquestioned confidence, justified trust, reflexive trust, and active distrust. Such knowledge leads to a more in depth understanding of how trust in science is constructed, which can help science communicators and educators choose sources and materials.
- Bringing back the debate on mediated and unmediated science communication: the public's perspectivePublication . Delicado, Ana; Rowland, Jussara; Estevens, JoãoWhen analysing the actors of the science communication ecosystem, scholarly research has focused on the perceptions and attitudes of scientists, science journalists, and science communicators. How the public envisages the roles of science producers and mediators is mostly uncharted territory. We address this gap, by examining the results of a public consultation in Portugal concerning science communication. We show that the public demonstrates a clear preference for science communication performed by scientists, over journalists, although credibility and trust depend on multiple factors. We also ascertain that professional science communicators are mostly invisible, though the public recognises the value of ‘translators’.
- Standard indicators for the social appropriation of science: Lessons learned.Publication . Moreno-Castro, Carolina; Vengut-Climent, Empar; Mendoza-Poudereux, Isabel; Serra-Perales, Ana; Crespo-Costa, Amaia; Delicado, Ana; Vicente, Helena; Estevens, João; Rowland, Jussara; Fero, Martin; Diener, Lenka; Guran, Peter; Leßmöllmann, Annette; Weiß, André; Miklosz, Margaret; Ciapala, Chris; Kłapa, Łukasz; Pellegrini, Giuseppe; Rubin, Andrea; Gómez, Fabián; Staszynka, Aleksandra; Verdejo, NievesThis book is the result of a two-and-a-halfyear close collaboration between the seven partners of the Erasmus+ KA203 project “Knowledge, beliefs, perceptions about the science of European students (Persist_EU)”. One of the project’s main objectives was to develop a tool to evaluate European students’ initial knowledge when configuring their beliefs and perceptions about different science topics. Once the tool (platform) had been designed, the next step consisted of carrying out activities (Science camps), which would allow validating the platform and identifying changes in perception (through questionnaires with Likert scales), which students experienced during their participation in training activities, organised within the framework of the project. For this, five Science camps were organised in five European universities, two in central Europe (Germany, Slovakia), and three nations in southern Europe (Portugal, Spain and Italy). Therefore, we make sure to cover differences related to socio-geopolitical issues. The topics that were chosen for the debate were climate change, genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) and vaccines, and it was expected that around 100 students would participate in each of the universities of the PERSIST_EU consortium (Valencia, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Trnava, Lisbon, and Vicenza).
