  • Natureza morta em Eduardo Viana
Publication . caseirao, armando; Calado, Margarida
The present essay pretends to be a contribution to the works of Eduardo Viana, who dedicated most of his life to the painting of still-life genre. In this sense, we originally pretend to find the genesis of the word and know its course in Portuguese artistic environment. Viana played a decisive roll in national modernism, in spite of living abroad for 25 years. When he finally returned home, persecuted by the Second World War, he exclusively dedicated himself to still-life painting, having been rewarded with several prizes. The analysis of the Portuguese and European environment and the artist’s life were essential for the study of its deeds. Here we present those who knew him closely, his Portuguese and foreigner friends as well as those who, directly or indirectly, exerted some influence in his work, with the analysis, comparison and dissection of it’s work

  • A vergonha de ser Lucrécia
    Publication . caseirao, armando

The following work intends to be a contribution to the study of drawing in the work of the painter José Escada. To accomplish that, it was necessary to investigate his artistic life and all of his works, for Escada dedicated most of his life to artistic production. Escada played a very important roll in national artistic scene, although he lived for about a decade in Paris where he faced extreme difficulties. In the city of lights where he exiled due to a miss understanding, he founded the KWY group with René Bertholo, Lourdes Castro, João Vieira, Costa Pinheiro, Gonçalo Duarte, Jan Voss and Christo, which had great relevance in the artistic world at the time. He returned to Portugal as the “Primavera Marcelista” settled in, but shortly after the April revolution’s consequences stroked the art market and left the painter with financial difficulties, even though he never quitted drawing. We began the investigation with the specific purpose of studying drawing in the painter’s works; however, we were confronted with the need of disclosure the painter’s life as until now nothing has been documented about the artist and we consider that for analyzing his work we must know and understand the circumstances of his life. Analyzing his life was determinant to approach his work. We present those who related to him, his Portuguese and foreign painter friends, those who directly or indirectly influenced his work, and we analyze and compare art works and its dissection. We investigate the importance of drawing in the whole of his work, in his diversity of techniques, in the construction of his multiplicity works whether plane or three-dimensional, figurative or not. In order to analyze his work we separated his artistic production by themes so that we could better comprehend both formal and conceptual preoccupations. Finally, we chronologically regrouped in a contribution for a Catalogue Raisonné all of his works that we were able to find.

  • Na minha cama com Dürer
    Publication . caseirao, armando
In the morning, I found myself staring at my undone bed… The draperies and cushions produced a series of rhythms, wrinkles, light and shadows that sent my imagination to rivers, mountains and hills, fantastic landscapes, textures of varying scales, a different world every day, the result of a different night all nights. The plasticity of the cloths as well as of the cushions makes the bed as a phenomenon to present itself as a novelty day after day. Sometimes still in the gloom, the morning daily ritual of awakening leads to a dazzle before the phenomenon of the rhythm of the folds, the shadows’ pleats and creases of the draperies and their textures. With a quick drawing we register the absence of the body, we register the impressions left by it
