- Accessing Children’s Digital Practices at Home through Visual Methods: Innovations and ChallengesPublication . Almeida, Ana Nunes de; Carvalho, Diana; Delicado, AnaInspired by the debates on participatory methods and drawing from research on “digital childhoods” in Portugal, this chapter aims to address the methodological innovations and challenges in collecting visual and digital data with children at their homes. As one of the stages of a research project on internet use, children were asked to take photos of their favorite objects at home and to collect screenshots of their most used webpages, followed by a conversation with the researcher. The use of photography allowed children greater expression and autonomy and gave researchers access to the children’s own perspectives on their home environment. It also provided unique information about the arrangement of digital objects at home and their different appropriations by girls and boys. Screenshots showed creative uses of the internet by children and gender differences. Ethical concerns were raised, due to the specific nature of working with children and with visual material (anonymization and dissemination). Entering the domestic setting provided a privileged access to children’s private sphere and to the in situ observation of their use of technology. However, the home is not a neutral place for a researcher and crossing the border into the private domain involves risks. These findings, illustrated by empirical examples from the research field, stress the importance of reflecting on and discussing the potentials, limitations, and ethical considerations of different methodologies, as well as their suitability to specific research objects, subjects, and contexts.
- Adapting whilst recovering: Local responses to the 2017 wildfires in PortugalPublication . Soares, Filipa; Schmidt, Luísa; Delicado, AnaIn recent decades, wildfires have become increasingly frequent and destructive worldwide. To tackle them, a shift in wildfire governance has been advocated: from fighting fire towards a ‘coexisting with fire’ strategy that emphasises fostering long-term, community-led transformations to reduce wildfire risk. This topic has received scant attention, particularly in Southern Europe, a region also grappling with land abandonment and an ageing, dwindling population. This article explores how such transformations unfold at the local level by exploring ten local responses to the catastrophic 2017 wildfires in Portugal, which caused over a hundred casualties and countless damages. Using a collective case study approach and qualitative research methods, the article analyses the practices, motivations, opportunities, and challenges underpinning four groups of initiatives: creating defensible areas around villages, reforesting communal land, goat grazing, and water infrastructures. These aim to simultaneously enhance security, reduce wildfire risk, and revitalise local economies and ecologies. Key elements facilitating these transformations include leadership, particularly by newcomers and local mayors, external funding, and volunteer work. However, challenges such as financial constraints, social conflicts, and land fragmentation challenge the sustainability of these efforts. While context-specific, our analysis suggests that the post-wildfire recovery phase can catalyse significant socioecological transformations in depopulated rural areas of Southern Europe, highlighting the need for further research to support communities in reducing wildfire risk. Ultimately, the study reveals how transforming landscapes and restoring practices of care might bring into being safer, more liveable, less flammable futures in devitalised rural areas amidst the growing threat of wildfires.
- Alterações climáticas e as crianças: novas vulnerabilidadesPublication . Fonseca, Susana; Delicado, Ana; Rowland, Jussara; Schmidt, Luísa; Almeida, Ana Nunes deÉ reconhecido pela comunidade científica que as alterações climáticas terão, como uma das suas consequências mais visíveis, a ocorrência com maior frequência e intensidade de eventos climáticos extremos. Estes eventos poderão, em muitos casos, resultar em desastres ou catástrofes de dimensão significativa, cujos impactos se farão sentir de forma mais intensa sobre os grupos mais vulneráveis, entre eles as crianças. No caso de catástrofe, as crianças são um dos grupos mais vulneráveis. As suas características especificas em termos físicos, emocionais/psicológicos e educacionais, associadas a fatores como a idade, o género, as condições de saúde, o acesso a recursos, o ambiente construído em que vivem ou as redes de sociabilidade, colocam-nas habitualmente numa situação de grande dependência e vulnerabilidade. Isto mesmo é reconhecido pela agência das Nações Unidas encarregue de trabalhar com as crianças – a UNICEF – que assumiu recentemente a necessidade de reforçar o seu trabalho e intervenção sobre o tema das alterações climáticas, por o considerar como uma das grandes ameaças aos direitos das crianças no presente e, em particular, no futuro. Os resultados a apresentar estão integrados no projeto de investigação CUIDAR – Culturas de resiliência à catástrofe entre crianças e jovens, financiado pelo programa Horizon 2020, que está a ser desenvolvido no ICSUlisboa,em parceria com o Reino Unido, Espanha, Itália e Grécia.
- Alterações climáticas e erosão costeira: três dimensões para um valor comumPublication . Schmidt, Luísa; Delicado, Ana; Mourato, João MoraisAs comunidades costeiras são particularmente vulneráveis às alterações climáticas, uma vez que estão crescentemente expostas aos riscos de erosão costeira e de subida do nível do mar. Nesta comunicação, analisamos, por um lado, as políticas públicas com incidência sobre as zonas costeiras vigentes nas últimas décadas; por outro lado, a dimensão socio-económica e de cidadania que caracteriza e dinamiza as populações residentes nessas zonas; por fim, o papel do conhecimento, da comunicação científica e dos cientistas num contexto das mudanças rápidas e incisivas que ocorrem no litoral português. Os resultados revelam a existência de um conhecimento específico acerca da evolução da costa, das mudanças costeiras e das suas causas; bem como uma atitude crítica em relação às opções técnicas que têm sido tomadas e sobretudo ao modelo de governação vigente. Propõem-se ainda uma série de medidas visando um futuro costeiro mais sustentável.

- Ambiente, paisagem, património e economia : os conflitos em torno de parques eólicos em PortugalPublication . Delicado, Ana; Silva, Luís; Junqueira, Luís; Horta, Ana; Fonseca, Susana; Truninger, MónicaNos últimos anos tem‑se assistido em Portugal ao crescimento exponencial do número de parques eólicos, respondendo às pressões políticas e económicas para atingir metas ambiciosas no que concerne à produção de energia através de fontes renováveis. A nível geral, este desenvolvimento tem‑se pautado por discursos consensuais – mitigação das alterações climáticas, diminuição da dependência energética face ao exterior –, mas ao nível local e situado os conflitos tornam‑se visíveis (destruição visual da paisagem, impactes nocivos nos ecossistemas rurais, nas atividades turísticas, na saúde). Este artigo tem como objetivo explorar os conflitos em torno da energia eólica, com base num estudo de caso exploratório realizado na aldeia histórica de Sortelha, acompanhado da análise de variadas fontes empíricas, tais como dados estatísticos, estudos de impacte ambiental, artigos de imprensa e de blogues.
- Analysis of the questions concerning energy and climate of the European Social Survey 2016Publication . Schmidt, Luísa; Delicado, AnaThis task is aimed at developing and implementing a survey study of public attitudes towards fusion energy and research in various European countries. It will entail the development of a specific questionnaire as well as the data collection by a specialized company and the data analysis. This task will also include a specific analysis of the data from the European Social Survey (Energy module) for the Portuguese sample. This deliverable (D002) introduces the results from both tasks, a) the design work for the survey on public attitudes towards fusion and, b) the results from the European Social Survey (ESS)
