- Brucella ceti in Common Dolphins (Delphinus delphis) in Portugal—Characterization of First IsolatesPublication . Cavaco, Sandra; Grilo, Miguel L.; Dias, Ricardo; M., Nunes; Pascoal, Pedro; Pereira, Marcelo; Fogaça, Catarina; Costa, Ana Beatriz; Pardal, Sofia; Ferreira, Ana CristinaThis study investigates Brucella ceti infection in marine mammals stranded along the Lisbon and Tagus Valley coast between 2022 and mid-2024, marking the first report of Brucella presence in Portuguese waters. Out of 59 examined marine mammals, B. ceti was isolated in three common dolphins (5.1%), a prevalence rate consistent with previous studies from other coastlines. PCR-based detection indicated a higher infection rate (23.7%), suggesting an underestimation of the prevalence of B. ceti infection in this population. Multi-locus Sequence Typing (MLST) and Multiple-Locus Variable-Number Tandem-Repeat Analysis (MLVA) revealed distinct genetic profiles and close relationships to B. ceti strains from the Atlantic, supporting the hypothesis of specific host-adapted lineages in dolphins. Virulence genes, including those for host interaction (bspE, btpB) and intracellular survival (virB7, vceA), were consistent across isolates, highlighting the pathogenic potential. Additionally, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes, such as mprF and efflux proteins (bepC-G), were also identified. These findings underscore the need for further research and surveillance to understand B. ceti transmission, host range, and impacts on Atlantic cetaceans, as well as to develop effective diagnostic and management strategies to mitigate infection risks in marine environments.
- Cerâmicas islâmicas no Garb setentrional “português” : algumas evidências e incógnitasPublication .
- CORONAVIRUS ANIMAUX ET HUMAINS: Évolution and pathogénicité du virus prévention des maladiesPublication . Duarte, Margarida; Nogueira, Teresa; Botelho, Ana; Cavaco, Sandra; Duarte, Ana; Santos, Patricia; Sousa, Rita; Portela, SaraThe most recently discovered Human coronavirus, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome - Coronavirus - 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is certainly the best-known coronavirus of all, as it is considered a successful invader. First identified in late 2019, it generated the current pandemic of coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) when it spread across the planet in only a few months. Like some other members of the same family of viruses, SARS-CoV-2 can infect different types of human cells, however, the epithelia of the lungs and larynx are the main targets thus preferentially causing respiratory infections. Mortality associated with COVID-19 alongside the impacts on health, education, the economy and individual and social well-being are currently a concern for the whole world. These are not only due to the effects of the disease, but also the pandemic control measures imposed by governments across the world, namely mandatory isolation, and we are still looking to adapt to this new way of life alongside a virus that was previously unknown. However, humans and other animal species have long lived side by side with other coronaviruses, many of which unknown to most people, some quite harmless whilst other potentially lethal. In that sense, this is no different. This book aims to assemble and disseminate information about the origin, evolution and pathogenesis of animal and human coronaviruses in a simple and accessible way, and through this clarify readers’ doubts and fears as well as the rationale underlying transmission prevention actions. The main text of the manuscript is accompanied by two types of additional information for optional consultation; more in-depth information about some of the mentioned concepts (know more) and a set of questions & answers, providing the reader with the opportunity to clarify doubts relating to the content of each section. For the preparation of this book, we counted on the collaboration of technicians, researchers and academics in the areas of microbiology, epidemiology, animal health and public health. During the production and editing process, a board game and cards (Beat Corona) were also produced. These further explored some of the concepts mentioned in this book, including behaviours related to life in society and their implications in the transmission of diseases caused by coronaviruses, including COVID-19. This game can be used as a pedagogical resource in the classroom context, or as a mere leisure and learning activity.

Gómez, Susana; Bugalhão, Jacinta; Catarino, Helena; Cavaco, Sandra; Coelho, Catarina; Covaneiro, Jaquelina; Fernandes, Isabel Cristina; Gomes, Ana Sofia; Gonçalves, Maria José; Inácio, Isabel; Liberato, Marco; Santos, Constança dosThe western end of al-Andalus is characterized by a striking distance from the main power centers and by a certain archaism of material culture. Pottery reflects rather well the evolution of these relations of power and exchange with other regions of al-Andalus, as well as the levels of interconnectivity of the different territories with the commercial networks of the western Mediterranean. The pottery "green and brown" was, since the Caliphate (tenth century) a privileged marker for these relations, highlighting the symbolism of its expansion on the tenth century and the commercial networks showing its dispersal over the eleventh and twelfth centuries. This paper includes a synthesis of the findings of this type of pottery in the Garb al-Andalus, defining homogeneous groups of ornamental and technical point of view and outlining the geography of production and commerce.
- Preclinical randomized controlled trial of bilateral discectomy versus bilateral discopexy in Black Merino sheep temporomandibular joint: TEMPOJIMS – Phase 1- histologic, imaging and body weight resultsPublication . Ângelo, David; Morouço, Pedro; Monje Gil, Florencio; Mónico, Lisete; González-Gárcia, Raúl; Sousa, Rita; Lucas Neto, Lia; Caldeira, Inês; Smith, Margaret; Smith, Susan; Sanz, David; Abade dos Santos, Fábio; Pinho, Mário; Carrapiço, Belmira; Cavaco, Sandra; Moura, Carla; Alves, Nuno; Salvado, Francisco; Little, ChristopherThe role of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery is not well defined due to a lack of quality randomized controlled clinical trials, comparing different TMJ surgical treatments with medical and placebo interventions. The temporomandibular joint interposal study (TEMPOJIMS) is a rigorous preclinical trial divided in 2 phases. In phase 1 the authors investigated the role of the TMJ disc and in phase 2 the authors evaluated 3 different interposal materials. The present work of TEMPOJIMS - phase 1, aims to evaluate histopathologic and imaging changes of bilateral discectomy and discopexy in Black Merino sheep TMJ, using a high-quality trial following the ARRIVE guidelines.
