Este revisão bibliográfica tem como objectivo dar uma perspectiva actual do aparelho miorrelaxante. Neste sentido, foi realizada uma pesquisa na base de dados MedLine, no período compreendido entre 1965 até 2010. Também foram utilizados “related articles “ e pesquisa manual. Deste pesquisa constatou-se que as disfunções temporomandibulares (DTMs), constituem um grupo de patologias que afectam os músculos mastigadores, a articulação temporomandibular ATM) e / ou estruturas associadas. Actualmente, a maioria dos autores propõe uma etiologia multifactorial para as DTMs. A terapia com aparelho miorrelaxante tem apresentado resultados favoráveis no controle das (DTMs). Por ser uma modalidade de tratamento reversível e não invasiva, é considerada um meio de diagnóstico e tratamento das DTMs. Um diagnóstico criterioso e precoce tem importância fundamental para diminuir as consequências das DTMs.
The purpose of this bibliographic research is to give a current view about the occlusion splints. Therefore it was done a research in MedLine database, between 1965 until 2010. It was also used related articles and a manual search in maganizes and books. The temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) represents a group of pathologies affecting the masticatory muscles, the temporomandibular joint and/or associated structures. Actually, the majority of autors proposes a multifactorial etiology for the TMD’s. A careful and early diagnosis is of primary importance to minimize the consequences of the TMD’s.
