- Marketing and social media : benefits, and ways forwardPublication . Tiago, Maria Teresa Borges; Veríssimo, José ManuelThe second generation of Internet-based applications enhances marketing efforts by allowing firms to implement innovative forms of communication and co-create content with their customers. Despite the strengths of social media for marketing purposes, few studies have empirically explored why firms have begun to use it. To redress this shortcoming, this study adopts the perspective of the firm to facilitate an understanding of digital marketing and social media usage as well as its benefits and inhibitors. Through an online survey conducted in July and August of 2011, data were requested from marketing managers of the 2000 largest firms in Portugal. One hundred and seventy questionnaires were completed. Results demonstrate that firms face internal and external pressures to adopt a digital presence in social media platforms. Further, we identify four levels of digital engagement evolution and propose a new digital pattern matrix based on benefit perception and digital marketing usage. To successfully explore digital marketing and social media, marketers need to adopt marketing strategies to engage in relationship-based interactions with their customers. To meet this challenge, firms should complement their traditional Web practices with online social networking.
- Knowledge sharing and knowledge protection in inter-organizational collaboration: uncovering the underlying relationships that influence innovationPublication . Oliveira, Mírian; Curado, Carla; Balle, Andrea Raymundo; Noradi, Felipe; Garcia, Plinio Sllva deThis research addresses the sources of absorptive capacity that influence innovation considering the dynamics of knowledge, since the balance between knowledge protection and inter-organizational knowledge sharing may enhance innovation. We examine the literature that suggests organizational absorptive capacity plays a significant role in achieving innovation. This research in progress proposes two alternative research models based on following constructs knowledge protection, interorganizational knowledge sharing, potential absorptive capacity, realized absorptive capacity and innovation. This original contribution seeks to expand the recent literature on knowledge protection specifically at the inter-organizational level. Both models can be used to deliver relevant contributions on either the mediating or moderating influence of knowledge protection. The theoretical contributions illustrate a) the mediating role of inter-organizational knowledge sharing between the potential and realized absorptive capacity, and b) clarify the influence knowledge protection has on interorganizational knowledge sharing, and the potential and the realized absorptive capacity. Furthermore, the empirical findings are expected to a) show managers how inter-organizational knowledge sharing mediates the potential and realized absorptive capacity, thus enabling innovation, and b) alert managers to the possible negative influence of knowledge protection on absorptive capability, interorganizational knowledge sharing and innovation.
- The effects of knowledge in the creation and sharing of knowledgePublication . Oliveira, Mírian; Garcia, Plínio Silva; Gomes, Fernanda; Bissani, Mário; Curado, CarlaKnowledge is important to companies of all sizes because it helps to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. Nevertheless, the knowledge management methods applied in large companies can not be adopted in small and medium enterprises, essentially due to their limited resources. This article aims to analyse the influence of the types of knowledge (tacit and explicit) in the knowledge management processes (creation and sharing) in small and medium enterprises. A survey method was adopted in which data were collected using a questionnaire with Qualtrics support. The 230 respondents were top managers from, or owners of micro, small and medium companies. Descriptive measures, exploratory factor analysis and partial least squares structural equation modelling were used to analyse the data. The research findings will help company managers determine the relevance of tacit knowledge. This kind of knowledge can be either beneficial, because it is more difficult to copy and demands less investment, and/or harmful, because it is more difficult to incorporate into the organizational knowledge. Therefore, to avoid its loss, companies need to ensure tacit knowledge is shared and used to create new knowledge. Companies need investments in information technology and employees time to increase explicit knowledge, which is difficult for small and medium enterprises. In academic terms, this research contributes towards our understanding of the roles of tacit and explicit knowledge in the creation and sharing of knowledge in small and medium enterprises.
- Quality in public administration: A causal configuration analysisPublication . Melati, Claudia; Janissek-Muniz, Raquel; Curado, CarlaThis article presents a qualitative study about the influence of Knowledge Management and Intelligence for a greater quality in decision-making and greater efficiency and effectiveness in the execution of the public activity. Data was gathered from the perspectives of public managers from southern Brazil and it was collected using semi-structured interviews. Fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis technique was applied to identify the paths leading to quality, efficiency and efficacy in the public administration. Results suggest that Knowledge Management and Intelligence are relevant for the quality of public managers’ decision-making, as well as for a greater efficiency and effectiveness in the execution of public activities. Findings also address the combination of these aspects with the support from the senior management and the existence of financial incentives. Additionally, results indicate that the absence of quality in decision-making and in the efficiency and effectiveness of the public activity are related to the absence or reduced use of elements of Knowledge Management and Intelligence in the Public Management.
- Knowledge sharing and protection mechanisms in hybrid and remote work settingsPublication . Bissani, Mario; Oliveira, Mírian; Gonçalves, Tiago; Curado, CarlaOrganizations can increase their competitive advantage by sharing knowledge. On the other hand, mechanisms are needed to protect this knowledge from leaking. Although there is a growing body research on hybrid and remote working, few studies have looked at the adoption of knowledge protection (KP) mechanisms in these work models. This study seeks to address this gap by analysing KP and knowledge sharing (KS) mechanisms in hybrid and remote work environments in information technology (IT) companies. The research method adopted was qualitative, exploratory, and cross-sectional, with data being collected through twenty semi-structured interviews conducted with professionals working in either hybrid or remote environments in IT companies. Regarding the interviewees’ characteristics, the male-female ratio was 60% - 40%, with an average age of 36 years, average time in the same company of 4.5 years, and around 2.5 years in the same position. The content analysis technique was adopted in the data analysis. As there is no standardization of days and times in the hybrid system, KS is hampered by the lack of face-to-face interaction between employees. The KS mechanisms mentioned are training, formal meetings, mentoring, and content available on the organizational intranet or platforms, among others. Not all organizations see KP as being important, and some even allow employees to use their own equipment, which may be potentially damaging for the company. This article presents theoretical contributions, such as the identification of sharing and protection mechanisms used in the hybrid and remote environments, and practical contributions, such as a list of mechanisms that can be used by companies. This research also highlights opportunities for future research, such as the identification and analysis of mechanisms in other segments of the economy, as well as research on the role of organizational culture in protecting knowledge.
- Knowledge sharing: Brazilian x Portuguese companiesPublication . Oliveira, Mírian; Curado, Carla; Romão, Mário; Maçada, AntônioCompanies working in the field of information technology are considered knowledge intensive. Knowledge sharing is one of the most important processes in knowledge management and is related, for example, to increased innovation. Hence, the main aim of this research is to investigate whether country and team tenure are moderators in the relationship between knowledge sharing, absorptive capacity and innovation in information technology companies. For this purpose, this research adopted survey method in which data were collected using a questionnaire sent by e‐mail with a link to the instrument. The 121 responses were divided into three groups: 43 respondents ‐ Brazilian companies operating in Brazil; 41 respondents ‐ Portuguese companies operating in Brazil; and 37 respondents ‐ Portuguese companies operating in Portugal. The countries were selected because they share the same language, and because one is a member of the BRICS group of countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). The data were analysed using Descriptive measures, Exploratory Factor Analysis and Partial Least Squares structural equation modelling. This study confirms the relationship between knowledge sharing and innovation with partial mediation by absorptive capacity and the role of moderators in this relationship. The country of origin of the company was not confirmed as a moderator in the relationship between knowledge sharing, absorptive capacity and innovation, whether the company is located in its home country or not. However, the two countries analysed here are classified as collectivist. Team tenure was identified as a moderator in the relationship (knowledge sharing, absorptive capacity and innovation), in this case, teams with members with up to 12 months on the same team display greater relational intensity. This may occur because when working together for longer, the group’s knowledge may become homogeneous, leading to reduced sharing. The results of this paper will be of use to both corporate managers and scholars.
