- Nymphaea: a visual survey on ancient egyptian yellow coffinsPublication . Sousa, RogérioYellow coffins form one of the largest and more intriguing corpus of Egyptian body containers. In terms of pictorial decoration, they excel in quality and levels of complexity, forming a unique art historical phenomenon. This book proposes an innovative approach to the examination of the visual culture displayed in these objects with a view not only to carry out an ‘iconographic mapping’ of the repertoire used in the several components of the yellow coffins but also to understand how and why they evolved along the 21st Dynasty. Ultimately this examination helps us to unravel the several layers of meaning displayed in these objects and to foresee the sociopolitical role they played in the Theban society of the 21st Dynasty. Besides theoretical insights, this book provides useful methods to stimulate researchers in exploring yellow coffins by themselves, by giving them objective tools for dating the compositions and understand the significance of a given coffin within the broader context of the yellow corpus.

Pedro, Susana TavaresTendo em conta a novidade que representa a tecnologia de transcrição automática e perante um modelo genérico de HTR treinado sobre manuscritos portugueses dos séculos XVI ao XIX, faz-se uma análise objectiva do que o utilizador pode esperar e, sobretudo, do que não deve esperar do desempenho do modelo. Disponível publicamente na plataforma Transkribus, o modelo Portuguese handwriting 16th-19th c. pode ser usado tal qual para a realização de transcrições ou servir de base a modelos ulteriores que acrescentem mais variedade de mãos para reconhecimento gráfico ou diferentes tipologias documentais.
- Daniel and Apocalypse: scapegoats for 21st Century violence?Publication . Valdez, Ana T.Twenty years after the 9/11 attacks and the beginning of the War on Terror that underlined the opposition between East and West, and now when the West leaves Afghanistan in the hands of the Taliban, this essay attempts to analyse if the reasons for what is described as “religious violence” can be attributed to the Sacred Texts. As we shall demonstrate, neither Daniel nor Revelation contain any “call to arms” to approximate the present to the time of the end. This “end” refers to the promised divine kingdom to be established by the deity at the end of time. It corresponds to a new cosmos, one close to the description of Paradise. Nevertheless, the texts clearly state that the time of the end is only known to God and that the righteous should endure the tribulation. What is clear from reading the texts and analysing the propaganda that has led to the gather of troops under radical flags is that the ignorance of most of the population regarding the content of the Sacred Texts is damaging and needs to be prevented. How? Through education, putting an end to the academic Ivory Tower, and initiating a real collaboration between academia and policymakers and the broader society.
- Apolo, o vinho e as Meras do PireuPublication . Aires Horta, MartimEste estudo procurará abordar o episódio do mito de Alceste, no qual Apolo embebeda as Meras para conseguir delas a salvação de Admeto, à luz das características do culto a estas divindades na religião grega e, em particular, na Ática. A recente publicação de três inscrições com normas rituais, duas delas até então inéditas, permitem-nos complementar o que sabemos do culto das Meras em Atenas para o Período Clássico. Nesse sentido, exploraremos a articulação dos sentidos e motivações nos rituais “sóbrios” com a representação de um deus que recorre ao vinho para conseguir algo da tríade. Por fim, argumentaremos que este episódio reflecte as ansiedades das jovens atenienses antes do casamento, que motivavam rituais prévios às núpcias, os proteleia, os quais também eram, precisamente, dedicados às Meras.
- Fixação e repovoamento florestal das dunas no Sudoeste da Península Ibérica, 1870-1930Publication . García-Pereda, Ignacio, 1980-; Gregório, Helena; Freitas, Joana Gaspar de, 1978As administrações florestais espanhola e portuguesa colaboraram, no final do século XIX, para produzir um conjunto pioneiro de projetos de plantações florestais em vários territórios dunares. A silvicultura das dunas ocupava um lugar privilegiado no pensamento administrativo e tinha características materiais passíveis de classificação padronizada. A análise destes projetos no Algarve e na Andaluzia revela claramente como as comunidades de peritos nacionais e internacionais geraram conhecimento e novas infraestruturas sobre o território dunar. As plantações de dunas constituíram uma conquista inovadora devido ao seu potencial para unificar as práticas de administração e assegurar para os estados o controlo dos territórios e recursos destas regiões periféricas.
- Toledot Yeshu as a framework of identity resistance. The Portuguese case: text and context (sixteenth–seventeenth centuries)Publication . Tavim, José Alberto R. SilvaThis essay focuses on extracts from Toledot Yeshu (Stories of Jesus) revealed in the trials of the Portuguese Inquisition from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Considering explicit and longer versions, as well as allusions that seem to point to the Jewish story of Jesus or other texts opposing Christianity, this paper aims to understand why they were used, and in what context, and explain their utilization across time. Additionally, it also seeks to highlight how extracts from Toledot Yeshu were used in speeches of identity defense that were part of the cultural heritage of Jews in the Iberian Peninsula on the eve of the general expulsions in the late fifteenth century.
- Mimesis and alterity: the conversions of Muslims and Jews in early modern Spain and PortugalPublication . Tavim, José Alberto R. SilvaThis article aims to question the antithesis visibility/ invisibility of the presence of Jews and Muslims who came to convert to Christianity in the Iberian Peninsula, during the Early Modern Age. How did the “host” society drive them into mimesis behavior (in terms of religious practices, social behaviors and visibility); and when this pressure nevertheless recalled and perpetuated his otherness beyond mimesis? The same is true concerning those who “crossed” the shores of the Mediterranean as “infidels”: how and when they intend “adapted” to the values of the surrounding society, i.e. what levels of mimesis they adopted; and yet they recalled or invoked otherness, even to underline the value of their “intended” social inclusion?

- O rompimento formal de relações diplomáticas em 1965 entre a Indonésia e Portugal: os sinais endógenos e exógenos que contribuíram para a fase final do regime do presidente SukarnoPublication . Fernandes, Moisés SilvaNeste artigo propomo-nos a analisar os fatores políticos que contribuíram de uma forma decisiva para que a Indonésia procedesse ao rompimento formal de relações diplomáticas com Portugal. Analisaremos ainda, os sinais de bastidor, externos e internos, dados por Jacarta. Pretendemos dissecar os rumores infundados acerca da invasão do Timor português pela autodenominada União da República de Timor (Uni Republic Timor, URT). Finalmente iremos ver as repercussões do golpe de Estado em Jacarta, em 1 de outubro de 1965, quer para o Timor português, quer nas relações indonésias-portuguesas. Quando o regime português passou a democrático e procedeu à descolonização do império português, o regime autoritário de Jacarta pôs em marcha a ocupação de Timor-Leste por javaneses, que durou 24 anos.
