- Bird taxonomic and functional responses to land abandonment in wood-pasturesPublication . Oksuz, Duygu P.; Palmeirim, Jorge M.; Correia, Ricardo A.Wood-pastures are socio-ecological systems covering vast areas in Europe. Although used for grazing and production of various forest goods, wood-pastures harbour a rich biodiversity and are usually considered as High Nature Value Farmlands. However, socio-economic pressures are driving the transformation of these valuable landscapes from multi-functional, heterogeneous habitats to homogeneous areas through either intensification or land abandonment. We investigated how changes in management intensity influence the taxonomic diversity, functional diversity and functional composition of birds in these landscapes using generalized linear models. In contrast to taxonomic diversity, functional diversity decreased significantly towards shrub-dominated and less heterogeneous areas related to the abandonment of grazing and/or understory management practices. Grassland and generalist species, and associated guilds such as granivores, ground-nesters and ground-foragers are almost absent less managed areas. On the other hand, shrub-dominated areas favour forest species, particularly understory/canopy foragers and arboreal nesters, although the forest guild is still well-represented in actively managed, heterogeneous areas. Our results indicate the abandonment of wood-pasture management affects the prevalence of grassland and generalist species, leading to functional diversity loss and potentially reduced ecosystem functioning. We suggest non-intensive, active management is needed to maintain habitat heterogeneity and canopy openness, enhancing trait diversity in wood-pastures.

- Globalization, freedoms and economic convergence : an empirical exploration of a trivariate relationship using a large panelPublication . Macedo, Jorge Braga de; Martins, Joaquim Oliveira; Jalles, João TovarUsing a large panel for 95 countries and the 1972-2014 period, this paper analyses the interactions among globalization, political & civil rights and economic convergence, through a simultaneous estimation technique. We use a multi-dimensional, de facto, and continuous measures of Freedoms and Globalization. We find a two-way positive relationship between civil liberties & political rights and economic, political and social Globalization, as well as significant two-way relationships with the economic convergence (using as a proxy the ratio of GDP per capita to the US). In this way, we extend the test for the two-way relationship between Democracy and Globalization put forward by Eichengreen and Leblang (2008). Overall, we also find a virtuous cycle between Globalization, Freedoms and Economic convergence, except for nonOECD countries at early intermediate stages of development. This positive systemic effect can be put into question by the recent negative shocks on Globalization and Freedoms related to the Covid-19 pandemic.
- Human Resource Management Practices and Organisational Citizenship Behaviour: What is the relationship?Publication . Moreira, Ana; Cesário, FranciscoThis study aims to provide additional empirical evidence on the impact of Human Resource Management Practices (HRMP) on Organizational Citizenship Behaviors (OCB). To this end it was hypothesized: HRMPs have a significant and positive effect on OCBs. A total of 525 participants, employees in different organisations in Portugal, participated in this study. The results revealed a significant and positive effect of HRMPs on OCBs. However, of the seven HRMPs only Performance Appraisal showed a significant effect on OCB.
- Cyclicality of fiscal policy : how do eurozone's fiscal stances change during recessions?Publication . Carvalho, Francisco Tiago dos Santos; Afonso, AntónioThis dissertation presents findings about the cyclicality of fiscal policy in the 19 Eurozone countries during recessions, for the period from 1995 to 2020. A time-varying measure of cyclicality is used to describe both overall and discretionary fiscal policy. The results suggest that during recessions discretionary fiscal policy becomes more pro- cyclical, but overall fiscal policy becomes more counter-cyclical. The results also suggest that the pursuing of a Ricardian fiscal regime by more indebted countries leads to higher counter-cyclicality of fiscal policy.

- Reform of the brazilian RGPS pensions systemPublication . Bello, Filipe de Oliveira; Simões, Onofre AlvesIn the last thirty years, the Old-Age Dependency Ratio increased nearly seven points in Brazil, from 7.0 in 1990 to 13.8 in 2020. Projections estimate it will rise to 36.2 in 2050. Furthermore, the condition of the Brazilian public finance is very serious: in 2019 and for the sixth consecutive year, it was in a deficit. The imbalance was mainly caused by social security, in particular by the RGPS (Regime Geral de Previdência Social) pensions system. A reform was approved and started to be implemented this same year, but doubts persist about it being deep enough to guarantee the looked-for equilibrium. Given this situation, the purpose of our work is to provide new insights on the very long run survival of the Brazilian public pensions, under alternative change scenarios, for instance, the shift to a Defined Contribution system. Transition costs and the costs related to the existing minimum guaranteed pension, are accounted for. Findings prove that the reform started in 2019 will decrease the large deficit for the next ten years, but after this an increase will be observed, although smaller than the one in a pre-2019 reform setting. Therefore, the sustainability of the system will remain a critical issue and further and more effective actions will have to be put into practice as soon as possible.
