Matos, Ana; Silvestre, Ana Isabel; Branco, Neusa; Ponte, João Pedro daO pensamento algébrico, mais do que manipular expressões e resolver equações, envolve as capacidades de estabelecer generalizações e relações, interpretar situações e resolver problemas. Este artigo apresenta três experiências de ensino que visam o desenvolvimento do pensamento algébrico dos alunos. Trata-se de estudos qualitativos e interpretativos realizados como investigações de professoras sobre a sua própria prática profissional. As experiências de ensino seguem uma abordagem exploratória e referem-se à aprendizagem da proporcionalidade directa (6.º ano), variáveis e equações (7.º ano) e relações funcionais (8.º ano). Os resultados mostram que, nesta abordagem, os alunos realizam aprendizagens significativas no seu pensamento algébrico.
- Ecotoxicological effects of the anionic surfactant Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) in two marine primary producers: Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Ulva lactucaPublication . Cruz de Carvalho, Ricardo; Feijão, Eduardo; Matos, Ana; Cabrita, Maria Teresa; Utkin, Andrei; Novais, Sara; Lemos, Marco; Caçador, Isabel; Marques, João; Reis-Santos, Patrick; Fonseca, Vanessa; Duarte, BernardoSodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) is an anionic surfactant, extensively used in detergents, household and personal care products, as well as in industrial processes. The present study aimed to disclose the potential toxicological effects of SDS exposure under environmentally relevant concentrations (0, 0.1, 1, 3, and 10 mg L−1 ) on the physiology and biochemistry (photosynthesis, pigment, and lipid composition, antioxidative systems, and energy balance) of two marine autotrophs: the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum and the macroalgae Ulva lactuca. A growth rate (GR) reduction in P. tricornutum was observed with a classic dose-response effect towards the highest applied concentration, while a GR increase occurred in U. lactuca. Regarding photochemistry, the decrease in the fluorescence of the OJIP curves and laser-induced fluorescence allowed a better separation between SDS treatments in U. lactuca compared with P. tricornutum. Although all pigments significantly decreased in U. lactuca at the highest concentrations (except for antheraxanthin), no significant variations occurred in P. tricornutum. On the other hand, changes in fatty acid content were observed in P. tricornutum but not in U. lactuca. In terms of classical biomarker assessment, a dose-effect relationship of individual biomarkers versus SDS dose applied; U. lactuca displayed a higher number of biomarker candidates, including those in distinct metabolic pathways, increasing its usefulness for ecotoxicological applications. By evaluating the potential application of optical and biochemical traits, it was evident that the fatty acid profiles of the different exposure groups are excellent candidates in P. tricornutum, concomitant with the characteristics of this anionic surfactant. On the other hand, the results presented by laser-induced fluorescence and some parameters of PAM fluorometry in U. lactuca may be an advantage in the field, offering non-invasive, fast, easy-to-use, high-throughput screening techniques as excellent tools for ecotoxicology assessment.
- O estudo de relações funcionais e o desenvolvimento do conceito de variável em alunos do 8.º anoPublication . Matos, Ana; Ponte, João Pedro daEste estudo aborda a relação entre a resolução de tarefas de investigação e exploração, envolvendo relações funcionais, e o desenvolvimento do pensamento algébrico em alunos do 8.º ano, dando especial atenção ao modo como estes interpretam e utilizam a linguagem algébrica. A metodologia, de índole qualitativa e interpretativa, é baseada em dois estudos de caso de alunos que viveram uma unidade de ensino de 16 aulas, que incluiu os temas sequências de números, funções e equações do 1.º grau. A recolha de dados envolveu duas entrevistas (uma realizada antes e outra depois da unidade de ensino), a observação participante de aulas pela professora, registada no seu diário de bordo, e os registos escritos pelos alunos. Os resultados da investigação sugerem que a ênfase no estudo de relações funcionais, com base em tarefas de exploração e investigação, promove o desenvolvimento de significado para a linguagem algébrica e a construção de uma visão mais ampla sobre o uso da símbolos.
- Exploring functional relationships to foster algebraic thinking in grade 8Publication . Matos, Ana; Ponte, João Pedro daThis article aims to identify the contributions of a teaching unit in fostering grade 8 students’ algebraic thinking. The unit is based on exploratory and investigation tasks about functional relationships. Using a qualitative and interpretative methodology, data collection included participant observation of classes by the teacher, registered in her professional journal, and gathering written records from students. Results indicate that working in the proposed tasks and combining students’ group work with classroom discussions promoted the development of meaning for the algebraic language. The work in this unit also encouraged the students to widen the number of strategies that they used to explore situations involving relations between variables, to reason in a more general way, and to express their generalizations using a formal language.

- Overview of Cosmetic Regulatory Frameworks around the WorldPublication . However, the regulatory approaches of each country may be significantly different and impact the competitiveness and economic viability of the industry. This work presents an updated review and comparison of regulatory requirements from the European Union, United States of America, Canada, Japan, People’s Republic of China and Brazil. It outlines contents such as the definition, classification and categorization of cosmetics, pre-market requirements, ingredients management, general labelling requirements, regulation of claims concerning advertisement and commercial practices, increase of animal testing and marketing bans on cosmetic products. Furthermore, it weighs the impact of regulatory differences on the safety and accessibility of these products in the mentioned regions.
