Este texto discute o estatuto sintáctico do expletivo ele em português europeu (PE). Tradicionalmente, as ocorrências de ele expletivo, notadas em variedades não-padrão de PE, têm sido analisadas como manifestações do sujeito em construções impessoais (em exemplos como Ele há cada uma!), inesperadas, no entanto, numa língua de sujeito nulo como o PE. Pontualmente, têm sido sugeridas análises alternativas que relacionam este elemento com posições estruturais diferentes da posição de sujeito, mais especificamente situadas no domínio da periferia esquerda da estrutura frásica. O presente trabalho visa contribuir para a caracterização do expletivo ele em PE, centrando-se na descrição das propriedades sintácticas e dos efeitos discursivos das construções que envolvem este expletivo num corpus de variedades dialectais de PE, em parte resumindo a investigação desenvolvida em Carrilho (2005). A evidência empírica assim cotejada apoia as análises que distinguem ele expletivo de um sujeito impessoal, motivando uma proposta de análise que relaciona este elemento com a codificação na sintaxe de aspectos discursivos particulares, associados a manifestações de força ilocutória.

Agreement variation in European Portuguese dilaects: on syntactic conditions for the alternation 3SG/3PL

In this paper we scrutinize a case of concord variation in European Portuguese (EP) concerning third singular vs. third plural verbal agreement in the co-presence of an overt plural argument, which in the standard variety agrees with the inflected verb. The paper is focused on the linguistic factors that correlate with singular concord in this context. Going beyond previous proposals that emphasize the correlation between agreement variation and particular morphological and phonological factors, it is shown that there exist syntactic conditions that favor the incidence of non-standard singulars in EP. The empirical basis for this investigation is CORDIAL-SIN, a dialect corpus of EP (600,000 words). The evidence from this corpus leads us to discuss and reconsider the role that different linguistic factors play in the manifestation of non-standard singulars. It is shown that this case of third singular agreement occurs in EP dialects in correlation with particular syntactic conditions, mainly in unaccusative-like configurations. Furthermore, it is suggested that this kind of agreement variation may be ultimately ascribed to lexical variation concerning the availability and feature specification of (null) expletives.

A anotação sintáctica do CORDIAL-SIN

The annotated dialect corpus CORDIAL-SIN provides straightforward and systematic access to a compilation of spontaneous and semi-directed speech from European Portuguese dialects. Optimal inquiry for precise morphological and syntactic information throughout this corpus is granted by two layers of annotation (part-of-speech tagging and syntactic annotation), which are automatically searchable for linguistic labels and structures through independently available tools. This paper concentrates on issues pertaining to the CORDIAL-SIN syntactic annotation: general aims, parsing procedures, the annotation system. Ultimately, the text casts light on the potential of the CORDIAL-SIN corpus as a tool for (dialect) syntactic inquiry.
