- The concept of version in genetically oriented scholarly editingPublication . Pereira, ElsaThe idea of textual variation was notably rejected in the early days of critique génétique, but versions have been playing a prominent role in most editorial schools of genetic orientation. This article presents a systematic review of the literature to distinguish the main working definitions and editorial approaches to the notion of version, both in genetic analogue editions and digital archives based on text encoding and computer-assisted collation.

Pereira, Elsa; Moreira, Filipe AlvesPoeta celebrado por muitos dos seus contemporâneos, Jorge da Câmara (ca.1619-1649) não viu obra publicada em livro, mas a tradição manuscrita da sua poesia foi objeto deuma edição crítico-interpretativa, dada à estampa em 2007. Aos testemunhos então editados junta-se agora a descoberta de um manuscrito autógrafo, contendo versão ampliada de um poemaanteriormente editado a partir de cópia tardia. Este artigo dá a conhecer o novo manuscrito,enquadrando-o numa perspetiva histórica dos autógrafos modernos e procurando relacioná-locom a transmissão apógrafa da obra camarina.
- Allographic translation, self-translation and alloglottic rewriting : towards a digital edition of poetry by Pedro Homem de MelloPublication . Pereira, ElsaThis chapter focuses on a series of interlingual materials related to the genetic dossier of 20th-century Portuguese author Pedro Homem de Mello (1904-1984), whose poetry is the object of an ongoing digital edition. Such documents may be organised into two main categories: a group of allographic translations (made by other persons than the poet) and a series of authorial witnesses, ranging from self-translation to alloglottic rewriting. The chapter starts by presenting examples of some of these occurrences and analyses their theoretical implications for an edition with a genetic orientation. It then proceeds to elaborate on the editorial approach adopted in the project and the use of the electronic medium to organise the digital archive.
- 17th century holographs in a personal miscellany of D. Francisco Manuel de MeloPublication . Pereira, ElsaNot many documents qualify as material evidence of 17th century holographs in Portugal. However, personal miscellanies can provide valuable insight into textual composition and transmission in the literary scene of the time. One of the examples worth exploring is a miscellaneous volume of papers collected by D. Francisco Manuel de Melo (1608-1666), which includes several manuscripts either written by the owner himself or by the hand of fellow contemporary poets. These are clean copies with few or no layers of revision, but still relevant to a certain kind of genetic criticism without drafts (GRÉSILLON, 1993), focused on the interstices of scribal activity and distributed authorship in the early modern period. The article examines little-explored documentation from the national archive Torre do Tombo, thus broadening the scope of genetic studies into the realm of Portuguese baroque literature.

Pereira, ElsaEste capítulo detém-se em dois tipos de iniciativas editoriais, envolvendo a poesia de Pedro Homem de Mello (1904-1984): as antologias inteiramente dedicadas ao poeta, que foram organizadas por outros escritores ou críticos literários, e as coletâneas onde o próprio selecionou composições suas, a partir de livros anteriormente publicados. Ao mesmo tempo que refletiam as preferências pessoais do autor, destacando, no conjunto da sua Obra prolífica, os poemas destinados a integrar o cânone, este segundo grupo de recolhas seletivas servia muitas vezes de pretexto para reescrever poemas antigos, submetendo-os a processos epigenéticos, que não eram alheios a motivações económicas e à interferência do plano social da receção.

- Authors’ rights vs. textual scholarship: a portuguese overviewPublication . Pereira, ElsaThis article addresses the main restrictions that European textual and genetic scholars face when the literary works they study are not in the public domain. Using Portugal as an example, the essay illustrates the most relevant contours of copyright policy and licensing in countries with a legal tradition of Droit d’Auteur, which protects not only intellectual property but also the sensitive moral interests of authors. While considering a few limitations and exceptions for teaching and scientific research secured in the law, the paper refers to case studies that showcase legal shortcomings in balancing authors’ rights with the academic freedom of textual scholars, especially when digital editorial methodologies are involved. We argue that the dominant protection currently afforded to copyright holders in Europe undermines the research ecosystem of this disciplinary field, rendering knowledge production and scientific publication practically unfeasible for anyone investigating textual variance in the works of 20th- and 21st-century writers. After drawing attention to the problem, we plead for policy-making adjustments to allow greater freedom in using copyrighted works for humanities research and scholarship.
- The materiality of typescripts in Pedro Homem de Mello’s writing practicePublication . Pereira, ElsaThis article addresses the main typewriting habits of Portuguese poet Pedro Homem de Mello (1904–1984), as evidenced in documents belonging to the family’s private estate and scattered collections owned by public archives and libraries. After examining his work in several spheres of activity (his personal and professional correspondence, his newspaper collaborations and essays as a folklorist, and his work as an author and presenter of TV and radio programs), the essay focuses on material aspects of Homem de Mello’s literary typescripts, such as page management strategies, the use of coloured ribbons, the occurrence of mechanical errors, or the combination of handwritten corrections and carbon-paper duplicators as a favoured revision technique. It concludes by interrogating how the author’s multimodal typewriting ecosystem may have contributed to stylistic changes in his poetry, catalysing freer modes of expression in the traditional forms of his choice.
