- “O Brasileiro”: sociabilidade, categorização social e estatuto transnacionais oitocentistasPublication . Corrêa Da Silva, IsabelJá desde o período anterior à independência do Brasil que a figura do “brasileiro” ocupa um lugar importante na literatura portuguesa, ficcional e não ficcional. E desde sempre a qualificação acarretou a ideia de uma natureza intermediária entre dois mundos. No espaço da monarquia atlântica não havia portugueses e brasileiros, mas havia territórios bem distintos e o “brasileiro” era o português que ia residir para o território do Brasil e depois voltava, ou não, para o reino. No século XIX, a manutenção e renovação deste circuito migratório consolidou-se já num contexto internacional pós-colonial entre dois países independentes. Sobretudo na segunda metade do século, o significativo aumento do fluxo de circulação de pessoas reflectiu-se no incremento da presença do “brasileiro” nas representações literárias, nos debates da opinião pública e mesmo nas agendas políticas. Mas neste contexto, e considerando o passado colonial que unia Portugal e Brasil, o “brasileiro” não foi visto como um mero emigrante. Corrêa Da Silva, IsabelFruto do investimento reformista da Coroa portuguesa e com décadas de dedicação ao engrandecimento e modernização da monarquia luso-brasileira, é quase aos 60 anos de vida que José Bonifácio se vê confrontado com os eventos políticos que levam à Independência do Brasil e à emergência de uma matriz ideológica de cunho nacionalista. Durante a maior parte da sua vida, a ideia de Brasil como uma organização política externa à monarquia portuguesa terá sido absolutamente inconcebível, de tal forma que sem esforço o imaginamos a adaptar ao contexto luso-brasileiro o espanto dos seus companheiros de Luzes parisienses de décadas antes. “Comment peut on être Brésilien?” podia bem ter sido uma das muitas frases que Bonifácio apontara nos seus cadernos perante as conjecturas de uma brasilidade autônoma. Defendo neste texto que a ideia de império atlântico foi o que pautou sempre o pensamento e a intenções reformistas de José Bonifácio e que é com essa chave que devemos ler a sua ação e entender os seus aparentes paradoxos.

- Representação Política e Cidadania no Espaço da LusofoniaPublication . Corrêa Da Silva, Isabel; Viscardi, Claudia; Raimundo, FilipaRepresentação e política são conceitos historicamente indissociáveis, embora o desígnio de alargamento da cidadania e da representatividade do governo seja prerrogativa da política moderna do Ocidente (VIEIRA; RUNCIMAN, 2008). Independentemente da genealogia e a da geografia da articulação dos conceitos, este livro foca exclusivamente o período a partir do qual as instituições representativas foram introduzidas na arquitetura do poder pelas monarquias constitucionais europeias do século XIX. Trazendo consigo uma nova dimensão da representação política assente no princípio eletivo (de sufrágio tendencialmente universal), estas instituições não dispensaram, não obstante, uma dimensão simbólica de representação por muito tempo ainda a dialogar e a reinventar lógicas de Antigo Regime. No espaço do antigo império português o convívio das duas dimensões de representação (PITKIN, 1972), assim como da matriz burkeana de legitimidade representativa, foi próprio das monarquias constitucionais portuguesa e brasileira, onde o quadro legal previa uma partilha da soberania entre o rei e a nação (RAMOS, 2018), e manteve-se até aos dias hoje nos regimes democráticos parlamentares de todo o espaço da lusofonia.
- Uncrowned kings: rituals and ritual objects in eighteenth–nineteenth century Portuguese royal acclamation ceremoniesPublication . Corrêa Da Silva, Isabel; Seixas, Miguel Metelo DeThis article examines the royal acclamation ceremonies of the Portuguese crown in order to grasp the responsiveness of the institution of the monarchy and regime to the challenges of modernity throughout the delicate watershed period of the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Portuguese Catholic and absolutist monarchy of the ancien régime had a strict protocol and a set of insignia of power that acted together at the moment of the acclamation and legitimation of each new king. The purpose of this research is to assess the adaptation and reinvention of these insignia and rituals according to the revolutionary demands of social change and secularization brought about by the turbulent period of the beginning of the nineteenth century: the French military invasions (1807–11); the departure of the royal family, court and administration to Brazil (1807); the liberal constitutional revolution (1820); and the civil war pitting liberals against absolutists (1832–34). The new constitutional monarchy that came out of this revolutionary flow faced many challenges of legitimacy, including the test of its capacity to create a modern royal imaginary updated to the cultural mindset of national and secular societies, and capable of bonding rulers with their people. The authors believe that the study of the acclamation ceremonies in the Portuguese constitutional monarchy can give us an accurate perspective on the quality of the symbolic image of the crown, therefore assessing the political efficiency of rituals as one of the structural aspects for institutional legitimization.

- The virtuous king and the maiden queen: the public image of Pedro V and Stephanie of Portugal between gender, sexuality and emotionPublication . Corrêa Da Silva, Isabel1Putting together concepts such as gender, emotions and sexuality to look back to a king is not just trying to keep up with academic mainstream. In the case of Pedro V of Portugal and his wife Stephanie, this combination of concepts results from a extended literary genealogy and is in itself the object of analyses of this essay. The fact that the physical and psychological intimacy of this king and queen has been the subject of public scrutiny for almost two centuries is in itself a historiographical phenomenon. The aim of this article is, on the one hand, to systematize the literature on the subject (chronicles, historiography, medical writings, fiction), summarizing its contexts of production. On the other hand, to identify the data that may allow an analysis of the mental and cultural frameworks in which themes such as marriage, conjugality, sexuality, masculinity and femininity were evoked and debated. All along, this journey will be done with sensitive lens in order to perceive the emotional repertoire that intermediates all these perceptions. *
