- A arte abstrata e os artistas portuenses: fenomenologia e cromatismoPublication . Reis, Carina Raquel de Sousa; Pereira, José Carlos Francisco; Umbelino, LuísAbstract art had a great development in the North of Portugal, where Júlio Resende and Nadir Afonso were among the artists who contributed to this artistic development in Portugal, especially for Informalism. The work of both artists uses a lot of color, making it an essential space for reading and interpreting works. Thus, it is necessary to resort to the theories of color and the phenomenology of perception to present a possibility of reading. Despite complex, extensive and difficult research that lead to the knowledge of Portuguese art, specifically in abstract Portuguese art, and theories and phenomenologies, the work was developed from the use of texts by José-Augusto França, Bernardo Pinto de Almeida, Raquel Playo to portray the Portuguese artistic panorama, especially that of abstraction, while the use of Goethe’s and Itten’s Color Theories, accompanied by Merleau-Ponty and Kandinsky serve to understand color and how it behaves in being. So, the color in Júlio Resende is as important as the color in Nadir Afonso, even if both use the color in different ways. Color is not without value, indeed it intensifies the reading of the works in both artists, taking the interpretation of the works, and their color, to other levels essential for understanding abstract art
Rosa, Mariana; Veiga, Maria Inês; Mourato, João MoraisEight years after the publication of the open letter Stand Up for Democracy by Ezio Manzini and Victor Margolin (2017), this dissertation revisits it in light of the global crisis of democracy. As the cornerstone literature, the letter calls for the exploration of design practices as catalysts for social change that contribute to strengthening democracy. Anchored in the vision of democracy through design, in which individuals have the freedom to collaboratively design their lives in spaces that transform dialogue into concrete results, this study seeks to answer the question: What is Design’s scope of intervention in practices of democracy? and sub-questions: How do design practices currently contribute to promoting democratic values in Portugal? How can Design better contribute to promoting practices of democracy? The study thus focuses on the current challenges and motivations of designers working to shape the present and future of democracy, with an emphasis on the Portuguese context. Through a methodology combining literature review, case studies and semi-structured interviews, existing design practices that foster new practices of democracy in formal and informal contexts are mapped and framed: design-democracy initiatives. The findings reveal that Portuguese designers, whilst demonstrating growing awareness of their role in promoting democratic values, acknowledge the discipline’s limitations regarding challenges beyond its scope, such as lack of political will or low civic engagement rates. The designer acts as a mediator by providing tools that allow communities to collaboratively solve their problems, access relevant and truthful information, participate in collective decision-making and lead their lives intentionally. The designer becomes visible, not as an indispensable figure, but as a mediator in these processes
- How Design Choices can support the mediation of historical contents for children: a project analysisPublication .
Silveira, Ana Paula Neves; Duarte, Jorge Manuel dos Reis TavaresThis investigation examined the process of how to shape things through a theoretical-practical approach, first by deepening knowledge and then by developing skills through graphic experimentation in the creation of a set of books. From this perspective, the research aimed to integrate the artistic and design competencies of the artist-designer in the act of transforming the affective history of an object into a book, premised on the understanding that ali components within a book are elements of language and communication. This process culminated in the volume "If My House Were a Book," composed of six individual book-objects. The first part of the investigation consisted of a theoretical and conceptual framework to discuss what form is and its conceptualization, the designer's project responsibility, the relationship of meaning between object and person, and the book as an object of experience and a space for language. The second part, focused on conducting graphic experimentation, highlighted the need for a clear procedural roadmap and guidelines. To address this gap, the principles of Bruno Munari's design methodology and visual message were juxtaposed with the author's creative process. From this intersection emerged a distinct creative and design methodology, which integrates the artistic and design competencies of the artist-designer and proved to be a valuable supporting tool in the conception of each book developed throughout the graphic experimentation. The research presents the application process of this methodology and the results of feedback collected to evaluate the effectiveness of the intended message in the developed books. It concludes with the investigation's considerations and learnings, indicating pathways for the future of research regarding the understanding of the book and its intentional uses as a language element in its conception
Oliveira, Catarina Isabel Alexandre de; Duarte, Jorge Manuel dos Reis TavaresThis project aims to investigate the concept of hybrid book and their ability to provide immersive emotional experiences to the reader; that is, it seeks to delve deeper into what these conception methods are and what is considered to belong to this genre of book, namely the interaction between the reader and the book as an object. Creating a reading that is not merely mental but also visual, which can promote or create emotional experiences. Thus, the book is conceived as an immersive experience, capable of establishing a deeper emotional connection with the narrative content. In line with this theoretical framework, the aim of the practical part of the project is to adapt an existing literary work to a hybrid book format, integrating narrative and graphic elements. The aim is for the book to offer the opportunity for interaction, requiring the reader to take action as well as process and experience, addressing the theme of terror, with a focus on the fascination caused by fear, explored through the narrative. Of the emotions most explored in this genre, fear is one of the most frequent. Horror stories exert a significant impact on readers' imaginations while simultaneously eliciting feelings of dread and attraction. In this context, the anthology of fear presents itself as a pertinent approach, allowing the gathering of different authors and styles that explore the theme from different perspectives. Through experimentation with narrative methods and their application to hybrid books, we seek to offer the reader a unique experience that differs from conventional reading. This approach aims to create an immersive environment, capable of provoking intense emotional reactions and physical sensations, transforming the act of reading into a sensory and emotionally engaging experience
Moreira, Ana Patrícia Castela; Duarte, Eduardo Manuel AlvesAs part of the Master's program in Museology and Museography at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, I chose to undertake an internship, believing it to be the most effective way to gain practical knowledge and integrate into a real work environment. I selected the Jeronimo’s Monastery and Belém Tower not only because of my existing professional connections with these institutions but also due to their significance as two of the most iconic monuments in the history of Portugal. To fulfill the requirements for my master’s degree, I present this internship report, which is structured around three key areas: Heritage Management, Conservation, and Musealization. In each of these areas, I will address theoretical issues, enriched by the practical experience I gained and the observations I made while working with the monument teams.
Silva, Regina Mariana Martins; Queirós, Francisco Albino Leitão Serra De PinaThis dissertation consists of an investigation into the concept of the Absurd, with its focal point on informing about the themes, ideas, concepts, and methodologies that form my artistic practice and way of thinking. Consequently, it is structured in two parts: firstly, a theoretical investigation of the Absurd, contextualizing and deconstructing it through the analysis of its languages and formats. Secondly, my practical work is addressed - my artistic production, which draws upon, materializes, and shapes the information established in the theoretical component. I emphasize that these two components inform one another without overshadowing each other, engaging in a dialogue that creates an argument born from their convergence. In both instances, the Absurd is understood as a vital element of artistic production, anchoring it in a creation that reflects the human experience. This analysis positions the theme in question as an act of consequence or response rather than as an attempt to evade an absurd condition. Fundamentally, through this document and my artistic project, it is presented a possible perspective on how we might coexist with this condition without losing ourselves in the vastness of the universe
Anjos, Beatriz Filomena Lopes dos; Gonçalves, Luís Jorge RodriguesPalácio Foz, decorated with notable 19th century artifices, houses numerous works of historical value, but does not offer accessible information about them to visitors. This project aims to investigate all information related to the works, including the context of their acquisition, and disseminate this information through a digital catalog accessible via QR codes. Virtual dissemination preserves the aesthetics of spaces and facilitates collection management, monitoring the number of visits and time spent on each catalogue
Silvano, Érica Sofia Martins e; Frade, Marta Alexandra da Costa; Lopes, RicardoThis master's project reconciles theory with practical experience. The realization of this work was made possible thanks to a partnership established with the Military Museum of Lisbon, which made available two works from its plaster collection. The study focuses on Mortero Alhambra® plaster, an innovative and relatively recent material, still little studied. The practice was divided into two main phases: 1. Conducting comparative tests of the plaster under study; 2. Conservation and restoration intervention. The comparative tests aimed to explore the unique properties of the Alhambra Mortar, which has distinctive characteristics, allowing a clear distinction between what is original and restorations, preventing the creation of false histories. This approach refers to the traditional technique of Kintsugi, valuing visible and authentic repair. The implementation of plaster was applied in two sculptures exhibited at Casa dos Gessos: Génio da Vitória, by Simões de Almeida (Tio), located in Praça dos Restauradores, Lisbon (Foundry: 1882; Dimensions: Height: 4.16m; Width: 2.7m; Depth: 3.32m; Weight: 4,083 kg). Figura da Victoria, by Thomaz Costa, located in Praça Duque de Saldanha, Lisbon (Foundry: 1909; Dimensions: Height: 3.48m; Width: 2.06m; Depth: 1.55m; Weight: 1920 kg). This project is not limited to restoring two sculptures, but rather contributing to the field of conservation and restoration through the application of new methods, materials, and techniques, offering information and tools for future projects
Orey, Luís Maria Gorjão Henriques Albuquerque d´; Mourato, João Morais; Carvalho, Carla Paoliello de LucenaWith an increasingly diverse immigrant population from cultures very different from our own, Portugal is currently facing the challenge of adapting to this new situation and integrating its new inhabitants in a fair and sustainable way. It is essential that this adaptation addresses, first and foremost, the basic needs of this population, with particular emphasis on health. However, language barriers between providers and users make it difficult for these communities to fully access health services. This research aims to explore the contribution of Human Centred Design as a consultation tool, assessing, through questionnaires, which communication tools and procedures are most used and the level of satisfaction of both health professionals and users who do not speak Portuguese. The results point to a negative scenario in terms of overall satisfaction, revealing significant limitations in the National Health Service's ability to mitigate the linguistic barriers faced by non-Portuguese-speaking migrant communities when accessing health services in Portugal. The research concludes by outlining a set of general recommendations aimed at mitigating, as far as possible, the negative picture diagnosed
