- Explaining trade and FDI relationships in a gravitational modelPublication . Cechella, Cristiano; Silva, Joaquim Ramos; Dentinho, Tomaz PonceIn recent decades, the world economy has undergone major changes, particularly with regard to trade and foreign direct investment. In view of this evolution, we need to review some basic assumptions of international economics. According to models based on the Heckscher-Ohlin-Samuelson seminal contribution, trade and foreign direct investment are taken as substitutes. Nevertheless this is not consensual. The purpose of this paper is thus to examine the links between trade and foreign direct investment through a gravitational model in the context of the present-day world economy. In the model, the explanatory variables of trade are the physical distances between countries, as proxy to transaction costs, their incomes, dummies for each country and standardized indicators of foreign investment attractiveness. The parameters to be estimated are the distance attrition, the coefficients associated with the foreign investment, and the dummies' coefficients, which can be seen as extra costs or benefits attributable to each country that are not explicit in the physical distance. Taking into account our findings, which favor the argument of substitutability, we draw some conclusions about the relationship between trade and foreign direct investment, with the aim of contributing to the ongoing theoretical debate.
- Levels and dimensions of diversity in small businesses: contributions for performancePublication . Curado, Carla; Tai, Silvio H.T.; Oliveira, Mírian; Sarmento, Joaquim MirandaAbstract: Purpose – The purpose of this study is to propose and test a model on the impact of diversity over performance using a Portuguese national wide comprehensively matched employee–employer dataset of small businesses. Design/methodology/approach – The study uses structural equation modeling to analyze the relationships between variables. The study addresses the impact of top managers and employees’ diversity on firm performance considering two dimensions of diversity: knowledge diversity and social diversity. Findings – The study provides a clear understanding of how workforce diversity affects performance differently at the two hierarchical levels. Both employees’ diversities have stronger relations to performance than the diversity of top managers. Results point out to idiosyncratic aspects of services firms’ dynamics that should be further explored. Research limitations/implications – The study presents some limitations, since it uses data from a single country and the dataset provides limited variables. Practical implications – The study offers evidence on the effects of diversity in small businesses alerting managers to acknowledge such influence when recruiting, selecting and training. With regard to services firms, managers should pay close attention to negative impacts of diversity over performance. Originality/value – Never before to the authors’ knowledge the managers’ level diversity and employees’ level diversity (considering two dimensions each) effect on performance have been addressed in a single national wide study.
- Portuguese economic growth 1833-1985: some comments on Pedro Lains' and Jaime Reis' doubtsPublication . Nunes, Ana Bela; Mata, Maria Eugénia; Valério, NunoIn their text, Pedro Lains and Jaime Reis raise some doubts about the progress made by our 1989 estimates of Portuguese gross domestic product, finding it hard to agree that they are more accurate than previous estimates. They argue that the methodology we used is shaky and that important parts of the picture we drew about Portuguese economic growth are unplausible
- Portuguese economic growth 1833-1985Publication . Nunes, Ana Bela; Mata, Maria Eugénia; Valério, NunoThe time has come for a thorough revision of the existing knowledge about Portuguese economic growth in the XlXth and XXth centuries. Several texts published in the 1980's have provided a lot of data and much seminal discussion. This paper tries to provide such a synthesis. Its first part presents new estimates of gross domestic product, which extend the quantitative basis and the time-span of previous estimates. Its second part discusses the conclusions that can be drawn from the estimates presented in the first part, and the perspectives they open for research on Portuguese economic history of the XlXth and XXth centuries. .
- Government expenditure on education, economic growth and long waves: the case of PortugalPublication . Nunes, Ana BelaRecent case studies on European economies have analysed the evolution of aggregate series for government expenditure on education and its relation to cyclical economic growth in the long run. These studies have depicted two different patterns in that relationship. In the case of highly developed economies, namely France, Germany and Great Britain, the evolution of public expenditure on education shows a counter-cyclical behaviour until the Second World War and a pro-cyclical movement thereafter. However, in the case of Spain, a different pattern seems apparent since the expansion phase occurring after the Second World War did not change the counter-cyclical evolution of the Spanish government's efforts to improve the level of education in Spain. In this preliminary approach, the Portuguese case seems to fit the Spanish pattern, once again leaving room for defending the possible existence of an Iberian (or Mediterranean) pattern as opposed to a Northern European pattern.
- From homo economicus to homo corporativus: a neglected critique of neoclassical economicsPublication . Bastien, Carlos; Cardoso, José LuísIn the 1930s, the conventional neoclassical concept of economic man was subject to different kinds of criticism. One contribution that so far has not been consistently scrutinised was presented by the economic doctrine of corporatism, which was particularly influential in Southern European countries. This paper deals with the foundations of the corporatist doctrine during the inter-war period, exploring the relevance of the concept of homo corporativus as a new approach to the study of economic behaviour and the economic representation of human nature.
