Abstract(s)
The time has come for a thorough revision of the existing knowledge about Portuguese economic growth in the XlXth and XXth centuries. Several texts published in the 1980's have provided a lot of data and much seminal discussion. This paper tries to provide such a synthesis. Its first part presents new estimates of gross domestic product, which extend the quantitative basis and the time-span of previous estimates. Its second part discusses the conclusions that can be drawn from the estimates presented in the first part, and the perspectives they open for research on Portuguese economic history of the XlXth and XXth centuries. .
