Abstract(s)
Framed within the scope of the “etic versus emic” dilemma (Spindler, 1975) applied to the assessment of intelligence, this research aims to investigate the advantages of using culturally contextualized instruments (emic´s approach), culturally transversal instruments (etic´s approach), in cognitive assessment of Angolan children. Thus, we present the cultural adaptation and experimental study of the Fluid Intelligence Test of the Intelligence Battery for Angolan Children aged 8 to 10 years (TIF-BICA/8-10), which has as theoretical basis the C-H-C Model (Cattell-Horn- Carroll). Children 8 to 10 years old (N = 200), of both sexes, from the central and peripheral zone of Luanda, were observed with the aim of studying the psychometric characteristics of the test. Metrological studies included the internal consistency; item analysis; and validation studies (factorial validation; empirical validation and convergent validation (the latter performed by correlating and comparing TIF-BICA/8-10 with Raven Colored Progressive Matrices CPM). The results showed good psychometric properties of the TIF-BICA/8-10 (e.g.: internal consistency of .86, internal structure suggesting the presence of a general factor which explains the variability of the results and a highly significant .69 correlation with the test CPM). The advantages of using TIF-BICA/8-10 over the CPM in the assessment of intelligence of Angolan children are also discussed.
