Abstract(s)
Test, trial, risk and failure: The image crisis and its implications in Communication Design aims to contribute to the exploration of the current circumstances in which the image resides, in an attempt to understand the influence of the image crisis on design practices. It thus aims to be a contribution to the theoretical and practical exploration of the converging relationships between Communication Design and image. The image is the preferential object of analysis and exploration in this dissertation, not only because we are trying to understand the functional unemployment attributed to it, but also because we are praising and favouring its use in tasks that used to be ontological to design. It reflects on the academic practices of the degree in Communication Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon between 2019 and 2024, whose conclusions are reflected in the foundations of the dissertation project which, in turn, contributes to the structuring of the writing component, justifying an investigation centred on design practice as a process. It was therefore decided to apply an interpolated method that works through resonance and interdependence between writing and practice. It introduces perspectives that situate the image in a time when the classical means of representation gave it a testimony that was considered authentic and real. This scenario paves the way for the transformation of the image, which becomes an object that is reproduced incessantly via photographic and film cameras. The impact of these means of reproduction on images is addressed, namely because their uniqueness is destroyed and their meaning becomes vulnerable and receptive to new contexts. Relating these conditions to the chronological line of the image's evolution, the study culminates in the present day, analysing the contemporary rubrics in which the image is inserted, alluding to the digitalisation processes that make its manipulation possible, as well as its synthetic creation. Test, trial, risk and failure: Praising the image in Communication Design, the project of this research, is made up of three printed fascicles and is constituted as a benchmarking exercise for exploring and analysing the conclusions of each theoretical chapter. Each issue presents a visual essay that shows how the image, like the verb that has taken its place in design functions, also communicates a thought and has a multitude of readings, depending on the way of seeing
