The increase in longevity brings new challenges to contemporary society, resulting in a greater number of elderly people in a situation of dependency. This reality is challenging for many families. In Portugal, the family is still the place that guarantees the care of its relatives, and it is in this context that the figure of the family caregiver emerges. Informal care is predominantly provided by the female gender, with the daughters having a large part of this task of caring for their parents. This dissertation intended to identify the reasons that lead daughters to become caregivers to their dependent parents. We followed a qualitative approach, which was based on a semi-structured interview with fourteen caregiver daughters. The main reasons that led the daughters to become caregivers to their dependent parents, the affective, were identified as the main reasons. As for the challenges, the daughters report major changes in their lives, especially at the personal and family level, indicating little time for themselves and the family and social restrictions.
