The study of heritage integrated into religious buildings is the central theme of this thesis, which aims to investigate the influence of the building's use on the preservation of its altarpiece heritage. This theme was developed starting with an analysis of the regional heritage and functional reality, with the study of the Santuário de N.ª Sr.ª da Boa Nova de Terena and the hermitages of São Neutel, Espírito Santo and São Pedro da Ribeira. We then moved on to the study of the hermitages of N.ª Sr.ª do Ó, N.ª Sr.ª do Amparo, N.ª Sr.ª da Natividade, São Vicente, São Brás and São Sebastião in the city of Évora, and ended with the study of the sixteenth-century altar panels of the hermitages of São Brás and São Sebastião. Following a multidisciplinary research methodology, we analyzed the relationship between the altarpieces and their original buildings through the contextual information available in the documentary sources and the technical and material study of the altarpiece paintings. We conclude that there is a relationship of symbolic and functional interdependence that links the altarpieces to the hermitages and that this connection is the basis of their integration. For this reason, safeguarding and musealization actions must take this duality into account in order to ensure the preservation of the ensemble's heritage identity. As a contribution to our research, the UP Heritage - You Preserve Heritage proposal presents the Heritage Passport - UP Évora and the UP Heritage Platform as a possible solution to the problems of dissociation from musealized heritage and access to heritage information. These mediation tools, which can be adapted and replicated in other contexts, were designed for the heritage reality of the city of Évora with the aim of creating an integrated safeguarding strategy that promotes the re-contextualization of musealized religious heritage and hermitagespt_PT
