Abstract(s)
This research attempts to investigate apartments with three bedrooms, typology which was used in Lisbon from the beginning of the New State period until the end of the twentieth century. The main objective of this dissertation is to characterise the evolution which occurred in the typology in order to satisfy the functional demands of the three bedroom apartment and to contribute to rethink the way in which we inhabit the modern city. To attain the desired results twenty-eight apartments were analyzed. These apartments are distributed in the metropolitan area of Lisbon where groups of four were selected pertaining to the each decade and referenced to their period of conception, as well as, the relevance which their architect had at the time. It was verified that the creative process did not always condition the spatial and physical solutions which were adopted or the spatial organization of the domestic functions. The most significant developments occurred in the transition from the seventies to the eighties. In conclusion, it was found that technological advancements played a big significant part in being able to satisfy the functional demands required for this typology, in particular when referred to the versatility required for a three bedroom apartment.
