Abstract(s)
Knowledge about the behaviour of economic agents was one of the key elements that enabled Brazil to overcome some of its major crises, such as the high inflations of the 1980s and 1990s. Furthermore, the history of the country is full of examples of how the excesses or inadequacies of the actions of the incumbent authorities came to amplify both the economic and social costs of addressing problems (often even introducing fresh adversities). Taking into account this context, and with the aim of contributing to the improvement of the action mechanisms of the Central Bank of Brazil, this work seeks to contextualize and present the historical evolution of national monetary policy and investigate the existence of indications that the characteristics of income distribution have impacted the authorities’ ability to influence the intertemporal structure of the household consumption choices (an element that represents about 65% of the Brazilian GDP from the demand perspective).
