In the first half of the 1950’s, the great Portuguese restorer Baltazar Castro performed a restoration in the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa (India) that caused an intense debate about patrimonial issues, which still continues today: Baltazar Castro removed the external plaster from the ancient church, leaving the stone uncovered. That action produced a radical change in the image of the monument, and at the same time provoked problems to its conservation. Since then, there is a huge debate about the relevance of maintaining the stone uncovered or plastering the church again, options that reflect not only the conservation of the basilica, but also the image of the monument and the city. This communication intends to analyze and discuss this singular case of patrimonial safeguarding of a monument built in India by Portuguese, restored in the middle of the XX century by them, and now maintained by the Indian Government.
