- Houses of dominance: an overview of the portuguese manor houses in the Province of the North (1521-1739)Publication . Thakare, Mayur; Santos, Joaquim Rodrigues dosLocated in a strategic geographical area on the west coast of India, the northern region of Konkan, in the present-day northern parts of the state of Maharashtra, the Western parts of the Union Territory of Daman, and the southern parts of the state of Gujarat, have attracted communities and maritime trade since time immemorial. The arrival and establishment of the Portuguese on these lands in the early 16th century caused a paradigm shift in terms of maritime trade and territorial dominance. During their two-century occupation in Northern Konkan, the Portuguese were responsible for introducing artistic, architectural, cultural, and religious practices and traditions. Many of these have been rapidly disappearing due to the accelerated urbanization of the territory around Mumbai. However, among the remnants that can still be found in the former Northern Province territory are the remains of manor houses built by Portuguese landlords. Almost all these manor houses, the traces of which have not disappeared, are now in ruins and their remains are completely neglected.
- "Balcão" and the Goan manor houses: anatomy of a singular architectural elementPublication . Santos, Joaquim Rodrigues dos; Carita, Helder; Kandolkar, VishveshThe Goan balcão is one of the most striking elements of Goan residential architecture and one of the attributes that is usually mentioned regarding the “Goanness” of Goan houses both for its architectural characteristics and the enormous cultural and social burden associated with it. The balcão precedes the main entrance to the Goan manor house and usually consists of a staircase of greater or lesser apparatus that offers access to a space flanked by masonry benches that can function as a semi-outdoor living space. Its importance in the context of Goan Brahmin Catholic houses can be seen in the individualisation and independentisation of this architectural element within the overall ensemble of the house, having taken on its own forms and expressions that have been replicated, reinterpreted, and reinvented over time.
- [Re]Framing the Venice Charter: contemporary heritage challengesPublication .
- Heritage at the crossroads: preservation of Goa's architectural treasuresPublication . Santos, Joaquim Rodrigues dosThe intention of this book is to present various writings (essays, stories, studies, advice, and thoughts) by scholars, technicians, heritage lovers, and other people concerned about the fabulous built heritage of Goa. Through several texts from various authors, one can realise and appreciate the value of the Goan architectural heritage, as well as the challenges facing it. But, above all, this book is focused on the procedures to preserve this heritage for posterity. More than merely the documentation of facts, it also aims to raise awareness about the importance of safeguarding Goan heritage, and, by extension, that of the world.
- Oratorians of Saint Philip Neri in Goa: a paradigm of Goan-nessPublication . Santos, Joaquim Rodrigues dosThe Oratorian congregation of Goa is a sui generis case: it was the first far-Asian native Catholic congregation that missionised other Asian (and African) regions. The missionary success of the Goan Brahmin priests, especially in Ceylon, brought them recognition within the society of Portuguese India, but the prominence of the Goan Oratorians was also physically marked on Goa’s skyline, through its imposing headquarters rising over the city. The Church of the Holy Cross of Miracles, built by an Augustinian priest, would have been impressive – a three-storey white church standing at the top of one of Goa’s hills, with, as we have seen, a façade belonging to the typology existing only in Goa. The significance of the church would have resulted from the symbolism of the place: the site of a prodigious miracle of Goa, and it would, therefore, have to be an impressive monument. The symbolism was extended to the Oratorians after the church was given to them: the Goan Oratorian congregation was created under the shadow of the Holy Cross of Miracles, from where Christ had appeared, thus blessing the Oratorians in their mission.
- Between villages and walls: legacy of the Oratorian Missionaries in Pernambuco (Brazil)Publication . Santos, Joaquim Rodrigues dos; Nascimento, Ana Lúcia; Lira, Ana LigiaDespite the numerous historical studies on the Oratorians in Brazil, little is actually known about the culture and art associated with this religious congregation – especially associated with its missionary activities. The usual administrative changes in the missions, between religious institutions, also make it difficult to point accurately to the Oratorian contributions in many cases. But the most important issue is undoubtedly the lack of research on Oratorian missionary art, which makes this a somewhat unknown area. The importance of this chapter, in which the art of the Brazilian Oratorians has been, for the first time, focused on as a whole, is therefore that it has now become clear that a probably vast and valuable heritage related to the Oratorian missions in the Brazilian hinterlands remains to be uncovered and studied in detail. The Oratorian missionary remains are undoubtedly part of a history of Brazil that is gradually vanishing, but if one carefully analyses these remains, evidence will surely be found of the Oratorian singularity in Brazil. Hopefully, the years to come will produce further scholarship on this issue and shed more light on the Oratorians’ artistic culture.
- Beauty, devotion and spirituality: the art and culture of the Oratorians of Saint Philip NeriPublication . Santos, Joaquim Rodrigues dosThe Oratorians of Saint Philip Neri, as well as their artistic production, were many times neglected in favour of other bigger religious orders, with more power, wealth and a more effective propaganda apparatus, such as Jesuits, Franciscans, Benedictines, etc. This book of essays intends to discuss the art and culture produced or associated to the Oratorians of Saint Philip Neri, especially focusing on issues still little known by most people, including many experts. This book is intended to be a key work in the studies on Oratorian art, in which the authors will focus on this very important artistic production, commonly forgotten when compared with other religious productions of art.
