Esta dissertação tem como objetivo analisar a presença da empregada doméstica no cinema latino-americano, incidindo particularmente em dois filmes específicos: Que Horas Ela Volta? (Anna Muylaert 2015) e Roma (Alfonso Cuarón 2018). Para isso, a dissertação está dividida em duas partes. Na primeira, traçamos um contexto geral sobre quem é a empregada doméstica na América Latina, e como seu ofício está envolto em questões sociais, raciais e de género. Além disso, averiguamos como surge a figura da empregada doméstica no audiovisual latino-americano e analisamos como esta tem sido representada no cinema dessa região. Na segunda parte, desenvolvemos um trabalho de análise aproximada do corpus seleccionado, com o objectivo de perceber como, nos filmes em estudo, a empregada ocupa o espaço doméstico – local onde ao mesmo tempo mora e trabalha – e se relaciona com seus patrões e os filhos deles –, uma relação baseada na ambiguidade afetiva, que aproxima, ao mesmo tempo que afasta, a empregada doméstica da família empregadora.
The present dissertation aims at analyzing the domestic worker’s presence in Latin American cinema, mainly in two specific films: Que Horas Ela Volta? (The Second Mother, Anna Muylaert 2015) and Roma (Alfonso Cuarón 2018). To this end, the dissertation is divided in two parts. In the first part, we present an overview regarding the domestic worker in Latin America, and how her work is connected with social, racial, and gender issues. In addition, we analyze how the figure of the domestic worker emerges in Latin American films and how she has been represented in this specific region’s cinema. In the second part, we develop a filmic analysis of Muylaert’s and Cuaron’s films in order to understand how the domestic worker occupies (the domestic) space – a place where she works at and inhabits simultaneously – and how she relates to her employers and their children – a relation based on affective ambiguity, which brings the domestic worker closer and, at the same time, distant from the employing family.
