ABSTRACT: The main objective of this research is to identify the 21st century living archetypes of the Ludovicense (someone born in Sao Luis, Maranhao, Brazil) middle class, from their new dominant social archetypes and also propose to identify and characterize their living spaces, uses, meanings and symbols. For this research, a study on the behavior, habits and customs of society in each period and life history up to the present was conducted in order to better understand current life. Some references that deal with the immateriality of living spaces and studies on the person-environment relationship, as well as evaluation and analysis methods were used as the basis for the analyses performed. For the methodology, we opted for quantitative and qualitative, which used survey methods and case studies in the field research phase. Questionnaires, interviews and walkthrough by researcher were used as the data collection instrument. A geographical and socioeconomic category was made in order to select the population to be studied, from criteria chosen based on analysis of classification methods. The results showed that the middle class population reached by the research still lives as the archetype of modern man cited by Tramontano (1998), but more globalized while its younger members are already contemporary citizens. As for their personas, the roles of father, mother, children and relatives were the ones that most caused differences in the use and meaning of the rooms in a home. The houses were collective, with marked use of common areas and as a female instrument of mastery over family members. It is more nest than shell, considering Bachelard (1993), because it works as a collective mold and not an individual one. The kitchen plays a key role in the construction and maintenance of this Ludovicense middle-class home and while the houses remain regionalized, the apartments have already been nationalized.
