Abstract(s)
The Carnation Revolution awakened Portugal from the long years of Salazar dictatorship. The Portuguese shook the world with the news that came from Lisbon and with the expectations that emerged from that revolutionary political process. Brazilians spread across several countries, fleeing the violence of the military dictatorship, were encouraged by what was happening in Portugal. After several displacements and frustrated expectations of return and revolution, as in Allende's Chile, they saw in Portuguese Abril a door of hope for finding a safe home and continuing to act politically during their exile. This dissertation analyzes this process of Brazilians' exile in Portugal, through the testimonies of those who experienced such a historic moment. Therefore, we seek to identify who these Brazilian exiles are, what led them to Portugal, under what conditions they remained in the country and how the exile in Portuguese lands changed their political, cultural and social references.
