This qualitative study, conducted in the form of an essay, takes the concepts of personal archives and scientific archives as its starting point to provide a panoramic analysis of current knowledge about the personal archives of scientists, including problems, perspectives, approaches, means of valorization and research trends. It seeks an international perspective, using examples of projects and studies from different countries, to draw up a picture of scientists’ personal archives today. As a result, it can highlight a tension between private archives and public archives, which leads researchers to consider what they produce as a result of their research, regardless of the nature of the research and whether they do it in the context of a public or private organization, as private documents. As for the research trends, they mainly concern the organization and representation of information, based on the method of archival identification, but there are also fewer studies on the preservation and economic, cultural and social valorization of personal archives. There are also studies on scientists’ archives within the scope of knowledge organization based on researchers’ correspondence, the possibility of organizing personal archives as an autobiographical construction and other methodological issues for their organization and representation, specifically based on the (scientific) biographical method and documentary research, for a proposal for a functional or faceted classification framework. In conclusion, even though the personal archives of scientists have been recognized and valued since the 1980s, this is still a subject that receives little interest from archivists and scientists.
