Abstract(s)
The thematic of heritage conservation in Brazil became relevant at the beginning of the 20th century, and in this context, it was especially important the "rediscovery" of the old villages of Minas Gerais, which emerged in the early 18th century, in a period of both Brazil`s and Portugal`s history known as the "gold cycle". For decades, colonial art was a protagonist in heritage policies, and before the first half of the 20th century, seven colonial cities of Minas Gerais had already been classified. Considering the recognized importance of these cities, it is aimed to develop an investigation about their traditional constructive techniques, with emphasis on the study of the colour and coating materials. The architectural and urban complex of Tiradentes will be used as a case study, and this choice is justified by its historical importance, the quality of its artistic and architectural heritage, the coherence of its urban and landscape set and the recognized pressure of the tourism phenomenon, which may change the image of these locations in the future. It is also important to note the problem of the conservation of Brazilian heritage as pertinence for the present research proposal, and the relevance of the colour and coating materials theme, which is an important field of research in the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon. The innovation of the thesis is related to the scarcity of information about colours and coating materials in colonial Brazil, and to the absence of studies with this theme in the context of the historical Minas Gerais`s towns. It is hoped that the results will contribute to the sustainability of the Portuguese/Brazilian heritage, by providing recommendations and knowledge in the fields of conservation, restoration, and construction history. Finally, it is considered that the results will positively impact the context of the global patrimonial culture, since knowledge, its transmission and dissemination, are instruments of preservation and conservation.
