ABSTRACT - Characterization of the Phenotypic Factors of Dogs Admitted to Sintra Municipal Kennel and Their Influence on Time to Adoption - Dogs are an integral part of our daily lives, with 39% of portuguese households owning at least one dog or cat (FEDIAF 2021). However, when owners are unable or unwilling to keep their pets, they are usually left in the care of animal shelters until they are adopted, which unfortunately for some dogs will mean living in a confined space for the rest of their lives. This study aimed to identify the phenotypic characteristics of dogs admitted to Sintra municipal kennel between 2018 and 2020 and how these influence time to adoption. These data allow the quantitative analysis of adopters' preferences, which may be useful for increasing the adoption rates and, consequently, reducing the length of stay of these shelter animals. In general, it was found that the dogs admitted were mostly male, young (less than 3 years old), of medium size and mixed breed, with predominantly straight, short, black or brown hair. Among these, around 83% left the kennel due to adoption, transfer, restitution or death, refering to an approximate retention rate of 17%. The preferred way out was transfer, followed by adoption and restitution. The shortest times to adoption were registered in puppies, small and “purebred” dogs, wherein as age and size increase, so does the length of stay. On the other hand, sex, type and length of hair do not significantly affect time to adoption, although brown, as a coat color, negatively affects the latter, with these animals registering longer times until adoption. The data obtained can be used in order to better understand the pet animal adoption “market” in our country and create strategies that seek to monetize the scarce resources available, to increase the success of adoption processes and to reduce retention rates
