A economia
alcançar a sustentabilidade.
Nowadays, the circular economy is an emerging concept and its relevance resides in the role it plays to contribute to a more sustainable activity by industrial companies. The main goal is the elimination of waste through the superior design of materials, products, systems and company models. The circular economy has been gaining attention due to the urgency of mitigating climate change, competitiveness and environmental regulations and is considered as a way to achieve sustainability. In addition, organizations are improving their business performance through digital technologies. However, the literature is poorly developed regarding the relationship between environmental management practices and the digital technologies used for the implementation of this practices. This dissertation aims to study the implementation of environmental management practices and digital technologies in the Portuguese manufacturing companies. The proposed conceptual model will test the effect of digital orientation on I4 technologies, as well as the impact of these technologies on sustainable performance. It also intends to analyze the influence of I4 technologies on the adoption of circular practices and the impact of circular economy practices on the relationship between I4 technologies and sustainable performance. Finally, the effect of closed-loop orientation on the adoption of circular practices is studied. This model was tested using 188 responses collected through an online questionnaire sent to Portuguese manufacturing companies. The results obtained showed that digital orientation positively affects the adoption of I4 technologies. The adoption of I4 technologies has no direct influence on sustainable performance, however, there is a mediating effect between these two variables that resides in circular economy practices. It was also concluded that the adoption of I4 technologies has a positive impact on the adoption of circular economy practices and, finally, the closed-loop orientation was also shown to positively affect the adoption of circular economy practices.
