Abstract(s)
The information as a basis for decision constitutes the main theme of this document, where its importance in the current external and internal context of organizations will be analyzed. The analysis of the evolution of Information Systems reveals that these have been developed with the main objective of supporting and automating the operational business processes. Data have always been considered as appendixes to the programs, these the real target for development. The incoherent gathering of data, processed by several applications with different objectives, and its storage in structures defined and oriented by Information Technology staff, caused the disintegration of the organizational data infrastructure. Prevented from understanding data as a business subject, the decision makers continue to depend upon the information supplied by the I.T. professionals. But the information they are given is never the one they really need. Ifs them who create the required information from the reading, analysis and interpretation of the data, internal and external, in the context of a specific decision. In the support of the decision making processes, three fundamental questions arise; integration and reorientation of data for the business matters; maintenance of the historical information; intuitive tools for exploring and analyze the information. The Data Warehouse and the OLAP concept present themselves as answers to these questions. In this work will be further expanded: the concept of Data Warehouse; its objectives; the developing methods; the expected impact on organizations; justification of the project; the methods and tools to analyze and explore of its information, also being proposed an organizational model for planning and developing a project of Data Warehouse, this one being understood as an excellent opportunity to re-think the management of information in the organizations.
