A partir das raízes históricas da construção da ideia de América Latina será apresentado um estudo sobre os desdobramentos do sentimento identitário latino-americano dentro do grupo de descendentes de imigrantes de origem japonesa no Brasil. A noção de território será fundamental para a compreensão do processo de apropriação cultural dos imigrantes japoneses que se estabeleceram no país. Essa população, além de se identificar com essa nova nação, após algumas dificuldades, também adotou, no seu processo de incorporação da cidadania brasileira, tradições e valores ocidentais. Boa parte dos costumes e ensinamentos japoneses que eles aprenderam no seu país de origem e com seus familiares foram passados para os seus descendentes das novas gerações já nascidas no Brasil. O desenvolvimento dessa cultura híbrida deu origem à identidade nipo-brasileira. Por meio de um panorama demográfico, de uma compreensão histórica do processo de ocupação e integração em território brasileiro e da realização de um conjunto de entrevistas ilustrativas sobre a identidade dos nipo-brasileiros pretende-se responder ao desafio central de compreender se essas pessoas se identificam como latino-americanos, para além de tentar entender melhor as características que compõem a imagem dos latino-americanos para essas pessoas de ascendência asiática.
Based on the historical roots of the construction of the idea of Latin America, a study will be presented on the unfolding of Latin American identity feeling within the group of descendants of Japanese immigrants of Brazil. The notion of territory will be fundamental for understanding the process of cultural appropriation of Japanese immigrants who have settled in the country. This population, in addition to identifying with this new nation, after some difficulties, has also adopted Western traditions and values prevalent in Brazil. Much of the Japanese customs and learnings that they were thaught in their country of origin and with their families were passed on to their descendants of the new generations already born in Brazil. The development of this hybrid culture gave rise to the Japanese-Brazilian identity. Through a demographic panorama, a historical understanding of the process of occupation and integration in Brazilian territory and the application of a set of exploratory interviews about identity issues to a small sample of Nipo-Brazilians, this thesis aims to respond to a central challenge that consists in understanding whether these Japanese-Brazilians identify themselves as Latin Americans. In addition, it also seeks to understand the characteristics that make up the image from Latin Americans to these people of Asian descent.
