Abstract(s)
A temática que se desenvolve nesta tese de mestrado tem como objectivo principal estabelecer
a relação entre a emigração portuguesa e as actividades internacionais da banca portuguesa.
Efectua-se um levantamento sobre a inserção geográfica internacional da banca portuguesa,
identificando-se todos os registos existentes sobre esses comportamentos. Concluído o
levantamento, importa perceber quais as razões que foram determinantes para o percurso
internacional da banca. A correlação entre a emigração e a internacionalização da banca é
testada através da seguinte questão de investigação: a internacionalização da banca
portuguesa esteve relacionada com os projectos de internacionalização dos agentes
económicos portugueses, em particular os emigrantes, ou esteve associada a questões
relacionadas com operações de capital, nos principais mercados financeiros mundiais.
Outro dos objectivos deste trabalho prende-se com a estimação das remessas de emigrantes,
não só numa perspectiva evolutiva, mas, também, da sua distribuição espacial. Foi dado um
especial enfoque às remessas de emigrantes, na medida em que elas se constituíram como
um dos motivos determinantes no despertar da análise sócio-económica sobre migrações
internacionais. Analisam-se três aspectos fundamentais: a evolução das remessas de
emigrantes, durante a segunda metade do século XX, e a sua distribuição pelos países de
acolhimento; a existência, ou não, de correlação entre as variações nos montantes transferidos
e a presença de estruturas bancárias nos países de acolhimento; e quais os factores que
exercem maior influência sobre as remessas de emigrantes: questões sócio-económicas ou
aspectos meramente financeiros.
The underlying theme of the present thesis is the establishment of a correlation between Portuguese emigration and the international activities of Portuguese banking groups. A study was carried out in order to establish the geographic Implementation and activities of Portuguese banks, taking care in registering ali finds. Subsequently the reasons that led to the current implementation and activities must be recognised. The correlation between emigration and the internationalisation of Portuguese banks is then tested, based on the following premise: the internationalisation of Portuguese banks has been related with the internationalisation of other Portuguese economic agents, partícularly emigrants, or has been linked to matters such as capital market activities, particularly in the major economic markets. Another objective of the present thesis is the estimation of emigrant remittances, not only from a historical perspective, but also from their geographical dispersai. A special focus was put on emigrant remittances, on the premise that they constituted one of the principal factors in the study of social-economic analysis of international migrations. Three fundamental facets were studied: the historical evolution of emigrant remittances during the second half of the 20th century, as well as their geographical dispersai; the existence or not of a correlation between the value of such remittances and the presence of banking structures in the countries of residence of the emigrants; and which factors weighed more heavily on emigrant remittances — social-economic or purely financial reasons.
