Environmental threats to the future of humanity constitute a main concern of the modern society. Notwithstanding the growing body of the literature about how industries affect the environment, little research has focused either on hotel industry response to this challenge, or the impact that Environmental Management leads this industry at financial and operational level. This study was carried out in Portugal, where few investigations of this nature have been conducted before. This work analyses theimplementation of Environmental Management by the Portuguese hotels and it relation with the contextual factors and performance. Based on a sample of 161 Portuguese hotel establishments, the results suggest that the higher the category of the hotel, the more recent facility age, and being chain affiliated, the higher the levels of commitment to environmental good practices; and that there is no evidence of a significant relationship between the size of the hotel, and being located in a protected area, with the same degree of commitment. The results also suggest that there is a positive relationship between the size of the hotel and its Gross Operating Profit and a positive relationship between, being chain affiliated and the occupancy rate per bed, occupancy rate per bed and GOP. The results also conclude that there is no relationship between the hotel category and its performance, and finally that there is no statistically significant relationship between the Environmental Management of Portuguese hotel establishments and their performance.
