Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The origin of Praça Pedro II dates to 1612, with the French, commanded by Daniel de La Touche, who chose the place for the foundation of the village that would become Equinocial France. When the French arrived, they found the Tupinambás Indians. Then came the Portuguese, who expelled the French to recover the land that belonged to them. Praça Pedro II is located to the west, on the São Luís island, in the state of Maranhão, Brazil, at the tip of a hill, about 30 meters above sea level. Since its creation, it has preserved a fundamental role for the city as it concentrates several layers of History, as it has been the center of power constituted since then and exhibits artistic and architectural monuments of general interest. In this investigation we proposed to comprehend and interpret the Square considering the disciplines Arts and Architecture, to understand how the two areas conjugate, how they coexist in the Square and its surroundings if they are perceived as a sensitive experience and if that square can be considered a place in the world. Based on this proposal, we defined a qualitative research method due to the nature of the object and the path that we intended to impress on the investigation. We carried out the necessary steps of the project, which include the foundation, the look to the past, conceptualization, readings by artists, poets, filmmakers, among others. The final chapter, “Praça Pedro II, Today – Experiences and Ambiences” included: interviews with people who live or work there; concepts from specialists; and works of art inspired by the square, made by contemporary artists from Maranhão and shown to the public in Maranhão in a great art exhibition. The observations, readings and interpretations, the interviews, the specialists concepts and the art exhibition resulted in a narrative that gave us answers to the fundamental questions of the thesis: do Architecture and the Arts constitute a means of identifying Praça Pedro II, as a place? How do Architecture and the Arts coexist in the public space of Praça Pedro II? How have the Arts registered the square and how they see it today? Is the square a place in the world? And it confirmed our hypothesis: the relationship between Architecture and Arts shapes the identity of Praça D. Pedro II and is decisive for its apprehension as an emblematic place in the city of São Luís. The multidisciplinary approach with the interaction of different views, thoughts and knowledge was configured as fundamental for the study of the Public Space Praça Pedro II.
