Revitalização do Barreiro Velho

A presente proposta de projeto fi nal de mestrado versa sobre o estado desvitalizado do bairro denominado como
Barreiro Velho, no Barreiro. Após o encerramento da atividade industrial nas imediações do bairro, este entrou num
processo de declínio evidente, onde a dinâmica social e cultural que lhe corresponde se alterou, assim como o estado
do edifi cado. A mudança de paradigma traduz-se, no presente, em afl oramentos do passado percecionados na
estrutura urbana como edifícios devolutos e espaços expectantes, associados a apropriações recentes por parte da
comunidade de etnia cigana, que teve como contraponto o crescimento da insegurança da população envelhecida,
assim como novas apropriações que ignoram a convivialidade do lugar.
As sombras do passado associativo continuam a percorrer as ruas de uma envolvente segregada e degradada, que
tem no espaço público o elemento físico vinculador do bairro fragmentado. Neste contexto pretende-se fazer
uma refl exão acerca das relações inerentes ao espaço público e a potencialidade das mesmas, através das quais se
veicula a curiosidade intelectual e a possibilidade de aquisição de conhecimento através da leitura como catalisador
de novos encontros e discussões e capaz de diluir fronteiras no espaço público.
Compreendendo-se o sistema de ideais, valores e princípios, cujo reconhecimento pode ser potenciado pelo
usufruto do objeto arquitetónico, procura-se através da relação entre o projeto e a população contribuir para a
revitalização da vida local e despertar as novas intervenções para o contexto do lugar.
ABSTRACT: in Barreiro. After the closing of industrial activities in the neighbourhood’s vicinity, it entered a visible process of decline, where social and cultural dynamics were altered, as did the state of the built patrimony. This paradigm shift nowadays manifests itself as highlights from the past, perceived in the urban structure as abandoned buildings and expecting spaces, which in turn are associated with a recent appropriation by the gypsy community, leading to the older generation feeling less safe, as well as new appropriations which ignore the space’s conviviality. The shadows of the associative past continue to roam the streets of a segregated and degraded environment, with the public space being fragmented neighbourhood’s binding element. In this context, the goal is to make a refl exion about the public space’s inherent connections and its potential. Through these connections, intellectual curiosity is channelled, and the possibility of acquiring knowledge by means of reading as a catalyser for new meetings and discussions, as well as for diluting barriers in public space. Understanding the system of ideals, values and principles, whose recognition can be empowered by the usufruct of the architectonic object, serves to fi nd the link between the project and the population, with the goal of contributing towards the revitalization of local life and awakening new interventions in the place’s context.
