Abstract(s)
A par do património industrial, as infra-estruturas de transporte representam um dos principais legados do séc. XX. Oriundas, sobretudo, do período pós-revolução industrial, a sua presença na paisagem urbana reveste-se de uma dicotomia polarizada pela dilaceração que causaram nas paisagens urbanas e as necessidades de mobilidade das populações, que delas careceram. Inicialmente pensadas como um elemento alheio à arquitectura da cidade, importará olhar para o contributo que estas estruturas dão à vivência do urbanita. De génese linear, as infra-estruturas são tanto um elemento ligante como criador de barreiras, pelo que a compreensão do seu potencial é incontornável na procura de relações com as escalas que atravessam.
O cariz industrial do Vale de Chelas aliado à presença da ferrovia oferece a oportunidade para explorar as potencialidades das relações entre arquitectura industrial e infra-estruturas de transporte; o ponto de confronto mais directo encontra-se entre a Fábrica da Samaritana e o viaduto de Xabregas. Por essa razão, interessa perceber que relações se podem estabelecer entre esses elementos e que programas propor para as dinamizar sem esquecer o benefício da população local. A resolução passará sempre pela equação entre a capacidade conectiva da infra-estrutura e o potencial atractivo dos elementos que a ela se agregam.
A resposta a esta problemática residirá na capacidade que a arquitectura tem de trabalhar a diversas escalas, oferecendo a possibilidade de olhar o edifício como elemento integrante de sistemas maiores, como o bairro ou a cidade.
ABSTRACT: Along with industrial heritage, transportation infrastructures embody one of the 20th century main legacies. Especially arising from the post-industrial revolution period, its presence in the urban landscape acts, simultaneously, as a laceration of urban realities and an absolute need to the people. Initially projected as an alien element to city’s architecture, it is important to look at the positive contributions these structures can bring to the citizens. Linear by nature, infrastructures act both as a link and a threshold - the understanding of their potencial is crucial when addressing relations with the scales they come across. The industrial nature of Vale de Chelas and the existence of the railroad provide an opportunity to experience the possible linkages among industrial architecture and transportation infrastructures; the highlight of this particular situation can be found between Fábrica da Samaritana and Xabregas viaduct. Therefore, it’s important to assess which relations can be established between those elements and what functions they should hold as a stimulus to benefit locals. The solution is going to be a balance between the connective capacity of the infrastructure and the attractiveness of the elements attached to it. The answer to this issue lies in the ability architecture has to work in different scales, offering the possibility of regarding a building as part of a bigger system, such as the neighborhood or the city.
