Abstract(s)
Through a comparative reading of the works Palace Walk (1956) by Naguib Mahfouz and The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis (1984) by José Saramago, this dissertation aims to analyze the connection between geography and history, or space and time, as established in the narratives under study. The objective is to discuss the human experience of Egyptian society, specifically in Cairo during World War I, and Portuguese society in Lisbon during the period between the two world wars. By presenting the different geographical, physical, social, and psychological aspects of the two cities, as well as the most significant historical events of these periods, the works of Mahfouz and Saramago provide a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between human beings and space, as well as the impact of time and historical events on their existence.
