Abstract(s)
The Portuguese Basic Education program and syllabus, as outlined in what is called the Essential Learnings (AE, in Portuguese) and the Students' Profile at the End of Compulsory Education (PASEO for short, in Portuguese), shows that “Writing” is one very important domain to be developed by students. At the end of Primary School (4th grade) is expected that students will master basic writing techniques for various communicative purposes. The European Union has set a priority for the curricular integration of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) as a subject and the Portuguese government itself has come along by highlighting this in the document "Curricular Guidelines for ICT." Various studies have shown clearly that creative writing is a wonderful technique to foster student motivation for writing, especially because of its enjoyable and gaming perspective. Thus, by using student-centered strategies, along with the use of digital learning tools, we have developed a learning scenario which exposed students to creative writing activities. Our main goal was to seek answers to the problem which triggered this investigation – trying to understand how digital technologies can contribute to promote and develop creative writing in primary school students (4th grade). Therefore, we have conducted a qualitative research in which pre-test and post-test were applied, as well as survey by questionnaires and by interviews with the students from the class that participated in the project, and so with the head teacher. Results show clearly that students improved their performance as far as writing is concerned, and they also felt engaged and motivated. The impact of digital tools and technologies in developing and enhancing creative writing is fairly positive.
