Abstract(s)
This project aims to investigate, in the context of a mobile experimental library, what can be considered a book and explore its materialities as reading and poetic territory in the creation of a narrative. To begin, a theoretical framework is presented that addresses the main materials and formats used throughout the history of the book, up to the invention of the codex, and how these supports and inscription instruments have influenced the practice of writing and reading. Next, the anatomical parts of the codex book are detailed and how these characteristics are being deliberately exploited in the context of narrative and reading in contemporary object books. This is followed by a brief analysis of two public access libraries that house collections specialising in artist's books and independent editions, with the aim of understanding the challenges of cataloguing, preserving, conserving and exhibiting these works, which are similar to the books discussed in this investigation. In addition, two other case studies are presented relating to contemporary, non-governmental travelling libraries, which use their collections and equipment in urban or rural public spaces, promoting sharing, informal education, literary exploration and artistic creation. Finally, we report on the practical experience of this project during its formation and itinerancy throughout Lisbon and the surrounding area, in which the public was invited to come into contact with books of different formats, textures, sizes and literary genres through free reading, repertoire-building and creative workshops. What they had in common was a call to experiment with the object in order to construct meaning, poetics and narratives. By reflecting on the materiality of the book, this exploration seeks to help broaden the understanding of what a book can be and thus expand the possibilities for the reader to have a multidimensional experience of literary work.
