Este quarto volume dos Cadernos da Fototeca tem por base as diferentes séries fotográficas custodiadas no Centro de Estudos Geográficos da Universidade de Lisboa referentes à erupção vulcânica dos Capelinhos (Faial, Açores), de 1957-1958, assim como os filmes desta erupção realizados por Raquel Soeiro de Brito e Salvador Fernandes pertencentes à coleção fílmica do CEG, presentemente à guarda da Cinemateca Portuguesa-Museu do Cinema. O projeto editorial aqui oferecido tem a originalidade de abordar o contributo dos geógrafos portugueses que acompanharam este importante episódio eruptivo, interrogando o uso experimental da imagem em movimento não apenas como instrumento de trabalho de campo, mas também como veículo de divulgação de conhecimento científico. Enquadrado num estudo mais amplo sobre os recursos e as técnicas do chamado «cinema científico», é destacado o papel pioneiro de Raquel Soeiro de Brito, que consumou no vulcão dos Capelinhos o uso do filme na Geografia portuguesa sem a intermediação de operadores de cinema profissionais, ao mesmo tempo que se afirmou como a primeira vulcanóloga de Portugal.
This fourth volume of the Cadernos da Fototeca is based on the various photographic series held at the Centre for Geographical Studies of the University of Lisbon relating to the Capelinhos volcanic eruption (Faial, Azores) of 1957–1958, as well as the films of this eruption made by Raquel Soeiro de Brito and Salvador Fernandes, which belong to the CEG’s film collection and are currently held by the Portuguese Film Archive-Cinema Museum. The editorial project presented here is unique in its focus on the contribution of the Portuguese geographers who documented this significant eruptive event, examining the experimental use of moving images not only as a fieldwork tool but also as a vehicle for disseminating scientific knowledge. As part of a broader study on the resources and techniques of so-called ‘scientific cinema’, the pioneering role of Raquel Soeiro de Brito is highlighted; at the Capelinhos volcano, she established the use of film in Portuguese geography without the involvement of professional cinematographers, whilst also establishing herself as Portugal’s first volcanologist.
