Projecto comunitário intergeracional no antigo quartel do Regimento de Lanceiros nº2 em Belém

Os processos de desmilitarização e desindustrialização que tiveram lugar no século XX deixaram para trás um território retalhado, marcado por edifícios que não têm utilidade para a população do tecido urbano que os rodeia. O antigo quartel do Regimento de Lanceiros n.º 2, no limiar da freguesia de Belém, é um deles.
É curioso perceber que a desocupação do quartel não alterou em muito a relação com a população em volta, pois, dada a sua função militar, ele sempre esteve fechado sobre si mesmo. O desafio que surge é o de conceder um novo espaço à malha urbana, que sirva a população de Belém/Ajuda, a qual é bastante heterogénea: de um lado, temos uma população envelhecida, que corresponde a um terço da total, e do outro, temos uma população jovem, que aqui habita temporariamente, por força da proximidade ao Pólo Universitário da Ajuda.
Aliando a necessidade de reabilitação de património militar histórico à escassez de equipamentos de natureza artística, cultural e social, chegou-se à opção por um projecto comunitário intergeracional, que promova uma aproximação entre as gerações, propiciada pelo desenho dos espaços interiores, do qual são indissociáveis a luz, a cor e a matéria.
O mote deste projecto é assim a união do passado ao presente, tanto do ponto de vista da arquitectura como do ponto de vista humano.
The demilitarisation and deindustrialisation processes that took place in the 20th century left behind a fragmented territory, marked by buildings that are of no use for the population of the surrounding urban fabric. The former barracks of Regimento de Lanceiros n.º 2, on the fringes of the Belém parish, are one of them. It is curious to note that the vacation of the barracks did not significantly change the relation with the surrounding population, since, given their military function, they were always closed in on themselves. The challenge that arises is to grant the urban fabric a new space, that serves the population of Belém/Ajuda, which is quite heterogeneous: on the one hand, there is an aging population, that corresponds to one third of the total, and on the other hand, there is a young population, who lives here temporarily, due to the proximity to the Campus da Ajuda. Combining the need to rehabilitate historical military heritage with the scarcity of artistic, cultural and social equipment, an intergenerational community program was chosen, aiming to bring the generations closer together, which is made possible by the design of the interior spaces, from which light, colour and matter are inseparable. The motto of this project is thus the union of the past with the present, both from an architectural and a human point of view.
