The present work aims to address the urban void in Vale de Santo António. A closer look at this area determines an environmental regeneration that respects the valley and supports an urban plan where people have greater importance. A dynamic project is proposed, resulting from the studies carried out. The housing block is chosen as the basis for the urban design, with the purpose of creating an urban life and a sense of community. Its “core” is a space of transition and permanence, encouraging coexistence. Its galleries, which organise the housing units, emphasise neighbourhood relations. The silhouette of Lisbon’s rooftops is evoked to connect with the scale, history, and evolution of the city. Focus is placed on mobility and an intelligent use of public space as the foundation for the evolution of a more balanced, thoughtful, pedestrian-friendly city that is “close to everything.” Architecture, which is essential in enhancing the landscape and quality of life, can change the current state of the Vale de Santo António and therefore increases the role of nature within the context of the valley and the city. We hope that this work serves as a foundation for other and better projects. Architecture is an evolutionary process, as it is never perfect.
