This study investigates the preparation of Chinese university students for exchange programs in Portugal, based on the perspectives of Portuguese language instructors working at Chinese universities. With the increasing academic mobility between China and Lusophone countries, it is important to understand how students are prepared linguistically, culturally, and academically to engage in higher education contexts in Portugal. This is a qualitative study based on semi- structured interviews conducted with teachers responsible for teaching Portuguese as a foreign language (PFL). Content analysis of the interviews revealed key teaching strategies, challenges faced by instructors, and the competencies prioritized in the classroom — particularly oral skills, academic writing, and intercultural competence. The findings highlight the need for a more balanced approach between language instruction and cultural preparation, as well as the strengthening of pedagogical practices aligned with real immersion contexts. The study contributes to reflections on the role of PFL teachers as intercultural mediators and proposes recommendations for improving the preparation of Chinese students planning to study in Lusophone countries.
