The assessment of physical and physiological parameters in combat sports represents a challenge for coaches and researchers, given the complexity of the physical and technical demands involved. The aim of this dissertation was to develop a training control and evaluation protocol for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Sixteen competing athletes took part, distributed by rank (blue, purple, brown and black), competitive level and styles of play. The evaluation was divided into two types of exercises: specific (proposed protocol) and general to assess overall physical condition. The protocol included three exercises specific to the sport: gi grip, double leg and butterfly lift. During the protocol, the total number of repetitions and heart rate during and 5 minutes after the exercise were recorded. An index based on the work of Sterkowicz (1995) was drawn up to distinguish the different groups assessed, combining internal and external load. The results revealed statistically significant differences between beginners and advanced athletes in the number of projections (p = 0.03) and the index (p = 0.02), showing greater efficiency in the more experienced athletes. No significant differences were found between playing styles. The index showed discriminatory sensitivity according to technical level, proving to be a promising tool for training control, but it requires further studies to verify its validity.
