Esta dissertação pretende analisar a ação da censura ao teatro de revista português entre 1933 e 1939. Instituída ainda durante a Ditadura Militar, a Inspeção Geral dos Espetáculos (IGE) tinha como propósito a censura ao teatro. Com base na análise de revistas censuradas, de documentação associada à Inspeção Geral dos Espetáculos (IGE) e outras fontes primárias, pretende-se compreender o modo de funcionamento deste organismo e a forma como o Estado Novo utilizou a censura como sistema de controlo ao teatro de revista, um género que reflete de modo satírico e humorístico a realidade que o rodeia, essencial para uma análise do teatro enquanto espelho da sociedade. O estudo identifica três fases distintas estabelecidas por acontecimentos marcantes a nível nacional e internacional, que diferenciaram o modo de intervenção da censura: a consolidação do Estado Novo, a Guerra Civil Espanhola e o início da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Para além dos cortes efetuados ao nível do texto, procura-se analisar as consequências que estes tiveram no teatro de revista. A análise da censura ao teatro de revista permitiu compreender a forma como este género teatral foi utilizado como meio de propaganda do regime, mas também como espaço que conseguiu manter o sentido crítico, apesar do ambiente repressivo. Este estudo pretende contribuir para uma análise aprofundada sobre a censura ao teatro, com especial destaque para o teatro de revista, destacando a articulação entre a ideologia, o teatro e a sociedade e ainda os efeitos que a censura teve no desenvolvimento deste género teatral.
This dissertation aims to analyse the censorship of Portuguese Teatro de Revista between 1933 and 1939. Established during the Military Dictatorship, the Inspeção Geral dos Espetáculos (IGE) was responsible for censoring theatre. Based on an analysis of censored revues, documentation associated with the Inspeção Geral dos Espetáculos and other primary sources, the aim is to understand how it worked and how Estado Novo used censorship as a system to control Teatro de Revista, a theatrical genre that satirically and humorously reflects the reality that surrounds it, essential in observing the relationship between theatre as a mirror of society. This study identifies three distinct phases shaped by major national and international events: the consolidation of the Estado Novo, the Spanish Civil War, and the onset of World War II. In addition to examining the textual restrictions imposed, the study also considers their impact on the genre’s development. The analysis of the censorship of Teatro de Revista allowed us to understand the use of revue theatre as a means of propaganda for the regime, but also as a space that managed to maintain a critical sense, despite the repressive environment. This study intends to contribute to an in-depth analysis of theatre censorship, with a special focus on Teatro de Revista, highlighting the link between ideology, theatre and society, as well as the effects that censorship had on the development of this theatrical genre.
