Causative and Perception Constructions in European Portuguese: the dialectal data
Publication . Pereira, Sandra
This paper deals with the infinitival complements of the causative and perception verbs in European Portuguese (EP) dialects. It is based on the corpus CORDIAL-SIN (Syntax-Oriented Corpus of Portuguese Dialects – cf. http://www.clul.ul.pt/en/researcher/225-description-cordial-sin-syntax-oriented-corpus-ofportuguese- dialects) and its main goal is to describe these constructions and contrast them with the ones described for the standard EP. On one hand, the constructions identified in the standard variety, such as 1) Inflected Infinitive, 2) Exceptional Case Marking (ECM), 3) Faire-Inf and 4) Gerundial Infinitive (only for perception verbs), can be found in Portuguese dialects; by contrast, other (dialectal) non identified constructions occur in the dialectal corpus. Additionally, it is also our aim to map these different constructions in an attempt to detect some geolinguistic variation to identify syntactic areas. In what concerns the standard variety of EP, the ECM construction seems to be more common. This trend however is not confirmed by this dialectal data. Surprisingly, ECM constructions (as well as the Inflected Infinitive ones) do not show up very often and are not spread over the whole territory. Given the small amount of available data, namely for ECM construction, a parallelism between some EP varieties and other Romance languages can be suggested. In fact, it seems that this construction is not accessible in some EP varieties like it happens in the other Romance languages. In contrast, the Faire-Inf construction, which is the most frequent construction in the corpus and it is spread over the continental territory, is not found on the data from Madeira.
Sobre a distribuição geográfica de construções sintácticas não-padrão em Português europeu
Publication . Carrilho, Ernestina; Pereira, Sandra
Dialectal classifications and dialect characterization generally leave aside syntactic aspects of linguistic variation. Recent developments on dialect syntax enlarged the empirical ground for researching dialect differentiation and call for new regards upon the identification of dialects. This paper presents and discusses the geographical distribution of a selection of non-standard syntactic constructions in European Portuguese, drawn from the dialect corpus CORDIAL-SIN. The aims of this study are twofold: (i) to identify the areal distribution of some dialectal constructions in the Portuguese territory; (ii) to show how these syntactic areas meet, to a certain extent, important boundaries already identified for Portuguese dialects.
Agreement variation in European Portuguese dilaects: on syntactic conditions for the alternation 3SG/3PL
Publication . Cardoso, Adriana; Carrilho, Ernestina; Pereira, Sandra
In this paper we scrutinize a case of concord variation in European Portuguese (EP) concerning third singular vs. third plural verbal agreement in the co-presence of an overt plural argument, which in the standard variety agrees with the inflected verb. The paper is focused on the linguistic factors that correlate with singular concord in this context. Going beyond previous proposals that emphasize the correlation between agreement variation and particular morphological and phonological factors, it is shown that there exist syntactic conditions that favor the incidence of non-standard singulars in EP. The empirical basis for this investigation is CORDIAL-SIN, a dialect corpus of EP (600,000 words). The evidence from this corpus leads us to discuss and reconsider the role that different linguistic factors play in the manifestation of non-standard singulars. It is shown that this case of third singular agreement occurs in EP dialects in correlation with particular syntactic conditions, mainly in unaccusative-like configurations. Furthermore, it is suggested that this kind of agreement variation may be ultimately ascribed to lexical variation concerning the availability and feature specification of (null) expletives.
