  • Competition or Complementarity between ChatGPT and University Libraries: Perceptions of Higher Education Students about the support in academic tasks
Publication . Melo, Luiza Baptista; Sanches, Tatiana; Mendes, Jose Mario De Oliveira; Domínguez-Iglesias, Cristina
In this study, we analyze the use of ChatGPT in activities that take place in the academic community. This research investigates how this Chabot has been used by university students in Portugal and Brazil, and what impact this tool has had on their university libraries. The instrument used was a survey of students from different universities. The objectives of this survey were to obtain: data on the perception of the use of ChatGPT, its usefulness in fulfilling academic tasks, and how it affects the frequency or use of university libraries.
  • Fostering humanization in academic libraries: a case study about scaffolding autonomy and trust in students
    Publication . Sanches, Tatiana
Socially, the role of libraries in contributing to the humanization of higher education, through proximity services, has become more important. Personalized service services in higher education libraries aim to promote equitable access to technologies, expand the skills of students and researchers, and encourage their autonomy and self-confidence, through more personalized pedagogical strategies. Human well-being, quality of life, or social problem resolution, combined with technological development, aligns with the principles of Society 5.0. In the present study, a survey was applied to 100 users of a higher education library in Portugal, over 3 years (including the COVID-19 years). Having selected the parameters involved in the humanization of services, the results, measured on a Likert scale from 1 (dissatisfied) to 4 (very satisfied), reveal improvements in user satisfaction with the quality of the collections, the personalized reference services, and the training & support offered. Challenges identified include adapting information resources to users' needs, promoting community inclusion, ensuring equitable and quality care, and providing training in advanced research skills. Higher education libraries play a fundamental role in higher education humanization, providing proximity services that contribute to developing students' autonomy and confidence. The positive satisfaction indicators suggest that humanization in higher education can be successfully achieved with the contribution of these services.
  • Academic library services to support distance learning: what are we doing in post-COVID times?
Publication . Melo, Luiza Baptista; Sanches, Tatiana
During the pandemic situation brought about by COVID in 2020, higher education libraries promoted efforts to reach their readers in lockdown, demonstrating the adaptability of their services, products, and staff. The COVID-19 pandemic has driven social distancing around the world, closing universities, schools, and other services, and for that reason, the implementation of remote services has proved to be an adequate solution. Currently, after these intense alterations, it is essential to know what changes have remained in the provision of resources for distance learning. Did libraries take advantage of the lessons of COVID-19 to transform and readapt themselves? This article analyses the support for distance learning higher education libraries in Portugal continue to provide, regardless of the teaching model offered by their institutions. To this end, a survey was carried out among Portuguese higher education librarians based on the Standards for Distance Learning Library Services (ACRL, 2016). This study seeks to obtain data on the availability of services to users, the contribution to academic excellence through equity, direct human access, distance training, the remote services’ strategy, as well as the libraries' assessment in this context, and, finally, the online resources available. The results allow us to examine the strategic options of libraries in adapting their services to distance learning, revealing what sort of changes stood out in the recent period. An investigation like this is beneficial to understand and support the decision, not only in the selection of information resources to be purchased or allocated but also to define comprehensive strategies which, instead of looking for a drastic transition from a face-to-face model to an online one, should be complementary and maintain hybrid forms in the relationship with the libraries' users.
  • Perceptions on mobile information among undergraduates before and after Covid-19: some comparisons
Publication . Caballero Mariscal, David; Lopes, Carlos; Antunes, Maria da Luz; Sanches, Tatiana; Segura, Alicia
A comparative analysis of Social Sciences undergrad-uates’ perceptions of information literacy (IL) and the use/inclusion of mobile technologies (MT) at the uni-versities of Granada (Spain) and ISPA (Lisboa) before and after the Covid-19 pandemics. An exploratory so-cio-constructive focus group methodology was carried out based on a sample of eighteen Psychology and Ed-ucation undergraduates, in the final year of their stud-ies (May 2022). We implemented two focus groups, one in each country.Undergraduates experienced sig-nificant gaps, especially in IL knowledge and MT skills. They also perceived attitudinal and technological limi-tations in their teachers. Morever, there are some dif-ferences in attitudes towards MT inclusion in the pro-cesses of teaching and learning, according to the con-text. In this regard, Spanish undergraduates showed better skills and Portuguese ones a higher level of self-perception. Some shortages derived from the Covid-19 pandemic emerge, since there is a growing body of ev-idence on both the need for student-teacher closeness and the technical limitations of some teacher. After this critical situation, an open-to-experience mentality on the part of all the stakeholders isnecessary. Due to the qualitative methodology,we have implemented, the re-search is limited to a specific sector to be analyzed (So-cial Sciences undergraduates belonging to the last pregraduate year). Academic, educational institutions and teachers (responsible for the training of future gen-erations) must strive to understand the scope of mobile teaching and the possibilities of mobile devices to in-crease student’s motivations and to acquire basic skills too. To reflect on this situation turns into a priority to optimize the teaching-learning processes.
  • Arts education and writing as research and pedagogic practice: Critical perspectives in higher education or how we became the teachers yet to come
Publication . Paz, Ana Luísa; Caetano, Ana Paula
Based on the educative proposal of Dennis Atkinson, this article discusses the written practices of two teachers who lecture for a Ph.D. in art education. The goal is to analyse the process of conceptual appropriation and curricular development over four consecutive years of this experience, in relation to both the pair of teachers and the students. Using a hybrid methodology, which combines autoethnography, self-study and the narratives of the teachers and the students, writing emerges as the main focus of the research, as it is an essential work instrument of the classroom, of the teachers’ personal reflection, and at the same time a spring that provides sources and means for its own analysis. It is through writing that one explores the appropriation of concepts as diverse as pedagogy of the event, real learning, intra-relation and intra-action, which leads to the process in which the teachers end up becoming the teachers yet to come.
Publication . Ó, Jorge Ramos do
Publication . Ó, Jorge Ramos do; Vallera, Tomás
Publication . Ó, Jorge Ramos do; Scheinvar, Estela
